KARACHI: In compliance with the orders of the Sindh High Court, the Sindh cabinet on Wednesday in an urgently-convened meeting endorsed the decision of Sindh chief minister to surrender the services of Inspector General of Sindh Police AD Khowaja to the federal government and in his place posting of Sardar Abdul Majeed Dasti as the new Acting IG.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah chaired the meeting of the provincial cabinet, which was held at the CM House. Provincial ministers, special assistants to the CM, Sindh chief secretary, Advocate General Sindh, relevant secretaries of provincial govt departments, and other senior govt officials attended the meeting. Both timings and venue of the urgently-convened cabinet meeting were changed as earlier it was convened at 11am at the Sindh Secretariat. Finally, the meeting was held at the CM House at 3 pm.Before convening of the meeting, the proposed agenda to be discussed at the meeting was kept secret. Earlier, it was widely reported in the media that the cabinet meeting was convened in urgency to get the decision of the provincial govt regarding the removal of IG endorsed.
Finally, it was revealed to the media that the cabinet meeting had been convened to discuss the issues of prolonged power loadshedding, expected shortage of irrigation water in the current Kharif season, and complaints related to the ongoing population census drive in the province.
After discussing the items given in the agenda for the meeting, Sindh Advocate General Zamir Ahmed Ghumro briefed the cabinet about the proceedings of the case being heard by the Sindh High Court regarding the decision of the provincial government to remove AD Khowaja as Sindh IG.
The statement issued by spokesman for the CM House said: “The Advocate General Sindh Zameer Ghumro briefed the cabinet about the verdict of Sindh High Court in the case of IG Police. He said the court had observed that the cabinet had **t approved the decision of surrendering the services of IG police AD Khowaja and giving acting charge of the position to Abdul Majeed Dasti.
The cabinet endorsed the decision.”It is expected that the endorsement of the provincial cabinet of the decision of Sindh CM to surrender the services of AD Khowaja to the Centre and in his place appointment of Abdul Majeed Dasti as Acting IG in the province would be conveyed to the SHC on Thursday (today) when it will resume hearing of the case pertaining to removal of Sindh Police chief.
Dasti before being elevated as acting IG was working as Additional IG of Sindh Police for Research, Development, Inspection, and Enquiries. The cabinet meeting also discussed the recommendations sent by provincial govt to the Centre for appointment of a new full-time IG in the province. The recommendations of the Sindh govt to federal govt are senior most police officials Abdul Majeed Dasti, Khadim Hussain Bhatti, and Ghulam Qadir Thebo. Meanwhile, the meeting of Sindh cabinet discussed in detail and expressed serious concern over prolonged instances of power loadshedding in the province in areas being supplied electricity by the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company and Sukkur Electric Power Company. The cabinet meeting expressed serious concern over shortened supply of natural gas to K-Electric, causing shortfall of 400 megawatts in Karachi causing an increase in instances of loadshedding.
The cabinet meeting also discussed in detail measures being adopted by the Sindh Irrigation Department to manage shortage of water during the current season of cultivation in the province.
