PESHAWAR: Salah-ud-Din Khan Mehsud, a senior ******r of the Police Service of Pakistan, was on Thursday appointed the new inspector general of police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
"Mr Salah-ud-Din Khan, a BPS 21 ******r of the Police Service of Pakistan, has been transferred and posted as provincial police ******r Khyber Pakhtunkhwa," said a **tification issued by the government of Pakistan.
He was preferred over Akhtar Ali Shah, an additional IGP who was given acting charge to head the force after the retirement of IGP Nasir Khan Durrani, and Shaukat Hayat, presently the Inspector General National Highways and Motorway Police.
Salah-ud-Din Mehsud is one of the youngest police ******rs to be posted as IGP. Aged 52, he still has eight years of service remaining. Belonging to South Waziristan Agency, he joined the force as assistant superintendent of police in **vember 1989.
He remained ASP in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and Frontier Constabulary. He was later posted as SP Traffic Peshawar, SP Charsadda and Bannu, SP and AIG CID, AIG Telecommunication, SSP Swat and DIG Kohat. He served in a UN mission in Kosovo and worked as community welfare attache at the Pakistan embassy in UAE.
He also served in the Intelligence Bureau and as DIG CTD Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He was currently serving as Additional IG Special Branch. He is the junior most among the Additional IGs of the province.
The KP government wanted to post him as the provincial police chief on the basis of his performance and reputation as a clean and committed ******r. He has replaced Nasir Khan Durrani, one of the most decorated police chiefs of the province in contemporary history, who retired from active service on March 16 after heading the KP Police for three and a half years.
The important ****** of the police chief of the province was vacant for almost two weeks. There were a number of ******rs in the run for the top slot of the KP police and three were shortlisted.
Many in the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf were in favour of Salah-ud-Din Mehsud as it felt he could better continue with the reforms agenda introduced by the KP government and the former IGP Nasir Durrani.
