Holoxica Developing 3D Holographic Display for Interactive Visualization of Medical Imaging Data

Holoxica Limited (http://www.holoxica.com/), based out of the United Kingdom’s CodeBase (http://www.thisiscodebase.com/) accelerator and working in conjunction with scientists at ACTPHAST (http://www.actphast.eu/) (the Access Center for Photonics In**vations Solutions and Tech**logy Support), is currently developing interactive holographic video tech**logy with significant potential applications in medical imaging evaluation and manipulation.
http://www.medgadget.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Holoxica-2.jpg The company’s 3D holographic displays will be capable of displaying footage of internal organs and structures generated from MRI, CT, PET, or ultrasound data sets. Users will have the ability to enlarge, isolate, rotate, and pan through image volumes in real-time as dynamic features, such as beating hearts or inflating lungs, are visualized.
Holoxica utilizes photonics design and engineered diffractive optical elements, rather than a projection methodology, to produce free-floating holograms. To generate in-air voxels corresponding to the data collected from the various medical imaging modalities, slice data is assembled through a diffractive holographic screen. The result is a true 3D image, in contrast to augmented or virtual reality solutions that rely on presenting 2D stimuli in specific ways such that they are*interpreted as 3D media. By creating true 3D holograms, Holoxica’s tech**logy removes the need for accompanying*3D glasses or headsets.
While Holoxica is largely focused on initial applications for their system in the fields of medical, scientific, and engineering imaging, they also envision eventual functionality in gaming and communication. They recently received a grant of approximately $1.37MM from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 program (https://ec.europa.eu/programmes/horizon2020/) toward the continued development of the third generation of their display.
For additional Medgadget coverage of Horizon 2020 Projects, refer to prior stories regarding DiCoMo’s **vel x-ray detector tech**logy, which allows for low-dose, high-resolution imaging and diag**sis (http://www.medgadget.com/2016/11/dicomos-**vel-x-ray-detector-tech**logy-allow-low-dose-high-resolution-imaging-diag**sis.html), and the COBIOPHAD device, which promises quicker, more efficient drug allergy diag**sis (http://www.medgadget.com/2016/11/cobiophad-device-promises-quicker-efficient-drug-allergy-diag**sis.html).
