SUKKUR: The Secretary of Water and Power, Muhammad Younus Dagha, talking to The News after visiting Thar Coal Project, said that power theft cases had been sent to NAB.

He said that visiting Thar was like witnessing a dream come true after so many years of efforts by many individuals and companies. The federal secretary said that people in power would **t even listen to him seriously when he used to propose the project for power from Thar coal in 2008. He said that many of his seniors had sincerely advised him to stay away from a failed project “in order to save your reputation”.

Still, he was able to structure a joint venture between GoS and Engro, which was **w a success story, and Thar Coal Power project was to become a reality in a couple of years. The secretary said it would **t have been possible without the efforts of so many people.

He said that after zero loadshedding for industry since **vember 2014, **w they were moving towards only three hours of loadshedding for urban and four hours for rural areas from **vember 2016.

He said that an LNG-based power project of 1,200MWs at Balloki, District Kasur, would be generating its initial units in 2017. The secretary of Ministry of Water and Power said that the building of an “interconnection grid” between Pakistan and China would allow Pakistan to meet its energy demands when there are requirements.

“It will also benefit China to benefit from the potential of clean energy in Pakistan, especially hydroelectricity on the Indus River cascade lying all along the route of China Pakistan Eco**mic Corridor,” he said. The secretary said that Pakistan is very much positioned to become an energy corridor for the region and facilitate the exchange and optimized use of clean energy available in the region of South Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East and China.
