Ministry of Power will most likely refer the matter for approval to CCI,
the only forum to accede to such request
ISLAMABAD: In a new development, the Government of Punjab has swung into action placing its demand before the federal government seeking Net Hydel Profit (NHP) of Rs9 billion per annum with clearance of backlog amounting to Rs83 billion that has **t been paid to the province in the head of NHP since the financial year 2004-05.
At the very outset of the current financial year, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, through a letter, formally agitated with Prime Minister’s Secretariat this issue of paramount importance in terms of the provincial monetary needs asking for the clearance of backlog of Rs83 billion with Rs9 billion as Net Hydel Profit on an annual basis.
Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif has, to this effect, convened a meeting today (Tuesday) in Islamabad to be attended by secretary Ministry of Water and Power, chief secretary Punjab and Wapda chairman.
According to the Wapda sources, the meeting will chalk out the modus operandi to cater to the demand of Punjab government under which a summary containing the said provincial demands will be pitched by the Ministry of Water and Power before the CCI (Council of Common Interests) for approval. “The CCI is the only forum which can decide the volume of NHP of any federating unit.”
They said in case the CCI approves the summary, then the tariff of hydropower will further increase that will be paid by end consumers.The Punjab government is seeking the NHP of Rs1.10 per unit as being extended to Khyber PakhtunKhuwa.
The top sources further told The News saying that Punjab government headed by Shahbaz Sharif has actually demanded the NHP against the 1,800MW by hydropower projects installed in the jurisdiction of the Punjab province.
The electricity consumers are paying Rs18.704 billion as the NHP to the KP government for the projected hydro generation of 17,004gWh on account of hydel power stations situated in the KP.
However, the hydro-power projects for which the Punjab has asked for NHP include Jinnah hydro-power project of 96MW, Ghazi Barotha Hydro-power Project of 1,450MW, Chashma hydro-power project of 184MW, Nandipur hydro-power project 14MW, Shadiwal hydro-power project 13MW, Cheechuki Mallian hydro-power project 13MW, Rasool hydro-power project 22MW and Renala hydro-power project of 1MW.
