As is generally k**wn, an Indian Army camp in Uri was attacked by unk**wn gunmen recently. The attack killed and injured several dozen Indian soldiers, according to officials of that country. But before the attack was over, Indian officials and media went into an overdrive, blaming Pakistan for the attack. Then immediately afterwards, the Indian government, along with a subservient media, started harping on a jingoistic theme, employing all resources to create the hype of war between the two countries. If there were some saner voices in India, they were ig**red by drum-beating elements altogether.
Three developments are **teworthy as the wild imagination of the Indian media refuses to die down. First, while Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif presented Pakistan’s Kashmir case at the United Nations General Assembly, India’s response was rather amateurish and weak. The Indian envoy to the UN replied: “What my country and our other neighbours are facing today is Pakistan's long-standing policy of sponsoring terrorism, the consequences of which have spread well beyond our region.” She conveniently forgot to mention how many Kashmiris her country has maimed and killed in the last two months. The Indian envoy then claimed that the “Uri terrorist attack is part of a trail of continuous flow of terrorists trained and armed by our neighbour and tasked to carry out terrorist attacks in my country.” She again forgot to mention the lack of evidence and knee jerk and foolhardy sabre-rattling by her government and countrymen following the attack. Her speech was largely ig**red by the countries attending the UNGA, who had more important issues to tackle.
Second, following the Uri attack that left many Indian soldiers dead, there have been calls that India should change its posture towards Pakistan, especially the so-called policy of strategic restraint. Demands are being made by Indian media and officials to “impose costs on Pakistan for engineering such strikes.” Unfortunately, there is little understanding of what they are demanding could turn into and what it could cost India. Most of such hysterical elements believe that Pakistan is subservient to India like Bangladesh or Bhutan. Lacking pragmatic judgment and little k**wledge about the regional situation, including military capabilities of Pakistan, and blind faith in their poorly equipped armed forces would only lead to a serious situation that could cost a lot to India. Any talk about covert or overt air strikes in Pakistan, concentrated firepower assaults with 155mm artillery guns, Smerch rockets and BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles would result in immediate and deadly counter strikes.
Third, the situation in held Kashmir is becoming graver day by day with ** chances of protests dying down. **t to forget the fact is that India has rejected the request of UNHCR for access to the occupied valley. UNCHR had sought access for a fact-finding team to the IOK to assess the human right violations.
To be exact, India is only hiding the truth, the ground realities, as it is standing on a shaky ground. The fact is that the seismic activity in Kashmir following the killing of Burhan Wani is getting stronger. The Indian stance on Uri attack is a contradiction, an inconsistency.
