ISLAMABAD: The virtual split of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) into two distinct factions, one run by its leadership in Pakistan and the other by a coterie based in London, which has **w happened, became a fait accompli on August 23 when Dr Farooq Sattar and his squad publicly de**unced Altaf Hussain and distanced from his intolerable assertions.
Even if Farooq Sattar kept going far away from the MQM founder with the passage of time as per an “arrangement” with him, as some cynics believed, it was widely reasoned that such an “understanding” could **t last long or can be religiously followed and implemented, considering the tough situation the party is faced with in Pakistan where it is under constant watch. It has **w actually happened as the so called “deal” fell apart after London-based MQM Convener Nadim Nusrat harped on the old theme, eulogizing Altaf Hussain’s leadership and grip over it, disregarding all others.
The MQM Pakistan took ** time to retaliate and expelled Nadim Nusrat and three others, surrounding and advising Altaf Hussain in the British capital. This schism would widen as the time would pass. The MQM has **w been divided into two clear blocs, two independent parties – MQM Pakistan and MQM London. Immediately after Farooq Sattar’s open “rebellion”, many thought that it would be impossible for the MQM London to relinquish the iron grip and dreamy powers it had exercised over the party since 1992 when Altaf Hussain departed to Britain, and even before. It was contended that the cabal led by him would assert sooner than later, and it has done **w, provoking the MQM Pakistan to react fast. Had it delayed its stern response, it would have suffered damage and the impression that what it was doing was doing as per the agreement with the MQM founder would have been reinforced.
Sometime back, Farooq Sattar practically eliminated the role of Nadim Nusrat as convener in the affairs of MQM Pakistan by declaring that he would be dysfunctional unless he is in Pakistan to lead the party. He knew it well that Nadim Nusrat would never come to Pakistan to assume his responsibility in the party. Farooq Sattar had also jettisoned any say of Altaf Hussain, essentially translating into reality the minus-one formula.
It has been proved that it is impossible for the London group to put up with Farooq Sattar’s leadership even for one month. Therefore, it has made public that Altaf Hussain is MQM and MQM is Altaf Hussain, meaning that Farooq Sattar or any other leader is irrelevant and inconsequential to preside over it.
The MQM Pakistan chief, assisted by a large number of senior party leaders, was working hard to pull the party out of the dire straits Altaf Hussain has plunged it through his August 22 anti-Pakistan diatribe. His job has become more difficult by the activation of the MQM London. But as the time would go by and the tussle and conflict between the two factions would aggravate, the MQM voters and supporters would become more confused, and the party’s woes would intensify.
However, by being cornered for its policies and facing isolation, the London faction has hit back to assure the MQM activists that Altaf Hussain continued to lead the party and all others are big **bodies.
As the London bloc would be more activated, there are fears that violence may erupt in Karachi in which the leaders of the MQM Pakistan may become target, given the history of the party specifically Altaf Hussain. It is ** secret that those rebelling against him have been having an extremely tough time, risking even their lives at times.
But one thing is clear that although Altaf Hussain still has a dominant say among the MQM workers and activists, he and the London group are in ** position to shut down Karachi as had been happening in the past in the wake of just one call from him.
His power to create anarchy and chaos stood nailed when there was business as usual in Karachi on August 23 although he had asked his supporters in his controversial speech a day earlier to stage a demonstration in front of the Sindh Secretariat on that day. Without the support of the rank and file of the MQM based in Karachi and Hyderabad, the London group would be incapacitated to engineer and make successful any call for strike or protest.
