KARACHI: Indian Home Ministry on Thursday received Brahamdagh Bugti’s application seeking political asylum, Times of India quoted an official as saying.

A report published in The Times of India sheds light on difficulties that the separatist leader might face in getting the asylum. According to the report, India does **t recognize the 6,480 asylum seekers who according to the United Nations are staying in India.

“The situation is so complex that the officials in the Home Ministry are digging through 1959 records to check the process,” the Indian daily said.

Even the term 'refugee' is **t mentioned in any domestic law, it said.

The website of Times of India further said India has **t signed the 1951 United Nations Refugee Convention on the Status of Refugees, or its 1967 Protocol that stipulates the rights and services host states must provide refugees.

Moreover, Brahamdagh Bugti, who has long condemned Pakistani government for what he says excesses meted out to his followers, has chosen to remain silent over Indian atrocities committed against peaceful protesters in Kashmir but was quick to criticize Pakistani prime minister for raising his voice for the people of Kashmir on Wednesday.

Indian forces have killed over 100,000 people in Kashmir since it occupied the territory where it maintained heavy military presence for suppression of dissent.
