Says Pakistan’s external, internal policies have failed;
Nawaz should convene APC

PESHAWAR: Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali on Wednesday said that Pakistan’s external and internal policies had failed and expressed concern over the heightened tension between Pakistan and India and urged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to cut short his US visit and return home and call a joint session of parliament and All Parties Conference to take the political leadership of the country into confidence on the situation.

He gave a call for a countrywide protest on October 4 against the government’s bid to neglect the smaller provinces in the China-Pakistan Eco**mic Corridor (CPEC).Asfandyar Wali was addressing a press conference after a meeting of the central working committee of the party at Bacha Khan Markaz here on Wednesday.

ANP’s central Secretary General Mian Iftikhar Hussain and other party leaders were also present on the occasion.The ANP head urged the federal government to an**unce a ‘comprehensive eco**mic corridor’ for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan instead of a mere road to overcome the growing sense of deprivation in the two provinces worst affected by terrorism.

Asfandyar Wali said that concerns and reservations of the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and Balochistan about the CPEC must be addressed for the success of the project, stability of the Federation and future of the country.He urged the prime minister to explain the an**uncement he had made about the CPEC after the All Parties Conference in Islamabad a few months back.

“The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led provincial government should also explain its position on the matter. If the federal government has convinced the PTI government regarding the concerns of the people of the province about the project, the details should be made public,” he stressed.

The ANP chief claimed there was an increase in the unrest in the three smaller units of the Federation. “If concrete steps are **t taken to overcome this unrest, the moderate Pakhtun and Baloch political leadership would lose their utility and terrorists would fill the gap,” he feared. He said the country was faced with serious challenges both at the internal and external fronts. “In order to get out of the prevailing mess, internal and external policies needed to be reviewed as these have failed,” he said.

The Pakhtun nationalist leader also expressed grave concern over the wave of terrorism in the country, especially in Pakhtun-dominated areas. He said the frequent terrorist attacks in the Pakhtun belt and target killing of Pakhtun intelligentsia was a proof of the fact that the Pakhtuns were being pushed to the wall under a well-hatched conspiracy.

He expressed shock over the killing of 37 in**cent people in a recent terror attack in tribal Mohmand Agency. “This tragedy had the most shocking aspect as the media ig**red it and the government functionaries, including the prime minister didn’t bother to even issue a condemnation statement,” he pointed out.

“A day after the Mardan tragedy, the Container Khan climbed the container to enjoy drum and harmonium,” he remarked while referring to PTI Chairman Imran Khan.About the Fata reforms, the ANP leader said that any delay in its implementation would have negative results. He said the reforms package for the tribal areas should be an**unced soon in line with the draft bill tabled by FATA’s elected representatives.

Asfandyar Wali criticised the harassment and forced deportation of the Afghan refugees. He said insult of the Afghan refugees would never be tolerated.

He said Pakistan is his country and Afghanistan is his motherland. “My support for the Afghan refugees and peace in Afghanistan should **t be wrongly interpreted. My forefathers have rendered more sacrifices for freedom of the region, democracy in the country and rights of the people than the ancestors of Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan. I don’t need to give proof of my patriotism to anyone,” he declared.The ANP chief also condemned the blocking of the national identity cards of the people and asked the government to stop this forthwith.
