ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Thursday said the government would fulfill its commitment to eliminate loadshedding before the end of its tenure.

He was chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCE) and later attended a meeting with the new chairman Wapda here at the Prime Minister’s House.Nawaz emphasized the need for effective future planning alongside timely execution of ongoing projects to enable the government to ho**ur its commitment of eliminating loadshedding within its tenure.

The prime minister is leaving for the US and Denmark today (Friday) and is engaged in sorting out issues related to his priorities.He is scheduled to visit Muzaffarabad to meet the Kashmiri leaders before departing for the US where he will address the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Nawaz said while ensuring affordable and sufficient electricity for the people, arrangements must be made for the future power needs in the wake of increased eco**mic growth and industrial activity.“We will fulfill our commitment to eliminate loadshedding before the end of our tenure. Any delays must be analysed and appropriate measures be taken to meet the timelines.”

The meeting that took stock of the energy situation was also attended by federal ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Senator Pervaiz Rashid, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) for Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi, Secretary to the Prime Minister (SPM) Fawad Hasan Fawad and other senior government officials.

The Chairman Wapda, Lt. Gen (retd) Muzammil Hussain, briefed the meeting on the status of 969MW Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project969MW Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project (NJHPP) and 1,410 MW addition in the 3,478 MW Tarbela-4 Extension (4888MW after extension).

The chairman apprised the meeting that during his recent on-site visits an appropriate mechanism had been finalised to complete the project as per schedule. After fine-tuning the essentials and **n-essentials, the first unit of NJHPP will be commissioned in February 2018, while the remaining units will be functional subsequently before the summers of 2018, the chairman informed.

Briefing the meeting on Tarbela-4, the chairman Wapda said the first unit of Tarbela-4 will be ready for inauguration by the PM on 14th August, 2017. Appreciating the performance of chairman Wapda, the prime minister expressed satisfaction over the progress on NJHPP as well as Tarbela-4.

Secretary Water and Power Yunus Dhaga briefed the meeting on the benchmarks of the ongoing power projects. The ongoing power projects, including clean energy projects, coal fired power plants and LNG power plants, will add significant electricity to the national grid during the year 2017 and before March 2018.

The meeting was informed that nine power projects of over 1,000 MW including 330 MW (Wind) and 680 MW (Nuclear) were ready for inauguration by the prime minister. It was further said that the Thar-Matiari and Port Qasim-Matiari Transmission Line projects were also ready for ground-breaking by the prime minister.

The meeting was informed that the construction schedule of LNG power plants was on track and LNG based power plant at Bhikki will be completed well ahead of time. The secretary added that a comprehensive analysis of demand and supply of electricity during the summers of 2018 had been carried out and said approximately 3,000 MW power will be surplus by May 2018.

The prime minister emphasized effective future planning simultaneously with the timely execution of ongoing power projects. He said besides ensuring affordable and sufficient electricity for the people, arrangements must be made for the future power needs in the wake of increased eco**mic growth and industrial activity.

The prime minister said the government was determined to eliminate loadshedding from the country. “Our aim is to provide sufficient as well as cheap electricity to the domestic consumers. The Wapda needs to work efficiently to overcome energy shortages,” he added.

“Generation of affordable and clean electricity will **t only provide relief to the consumers, but building of water storages will also enable the country to fulfill its water requirements. Wapda needs to expedite building of water reservoirs across the country which would certainly minimise flood hazards as well.”
