MULTAN: Six persons were killed and over 150 others were injured when a passenger train travelling from Peshawar to Karachi hit a stationary goods train in Multan.
The accident occurred in Multan at 2:00am when the Awam Express passenger train rammed into a goods train after it stopped after running over a man crossing the railway track. At least, six persons were killed while over 150 others were injured in the accident.
The police, rescue teams and railway officials reached the area and pulled out the bodies and passengers trapped in carriages.
Rescue workers used metal-cutting equipment to try to reach injured passengers still trapped in the mangled wreckage, according to an AFP reporter at the scene. the passenger train driver, saying he failed to heed a red signal that went up after the goods train had stopped.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives in the train incident near Multan.In his message, he sympathised and expressed condolences with the bereaved families. He prayed for early recovery of the injured.
The prime minister directed the concerned authorities to provide the best medical treatment to the injured of the train accident.President Mam**on Hussain also expressed sympathy with the bereaved families and prayed for eternal rest of the departed souls.
A committee has been formed to investigate the incident. Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique has directed authorities concerned to submit an inquiry report within three days.Meanwhile, two people were killed when a passenger train hit a vehicle at a railway crossing in Rawalpindi on Thursday.
The incident took place at the Hatar Phatak in Fatehjang. According to sources, the Multan-bound Mehr Express collided with the vehicle as the crossing was **t closed for general traffic.
