FAISALABAD: Mission Director for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) John Groarke has said that the US government has provided 200 bicycles for the UAF’s Women Cycling Club.
He informed this while chairing a function held at the UAF here on Friday. He told that the donation was a part of a grant to empower women in Pakistan’s agriculture sector under the USAID’s Gender Equity Programme. He said that these bicycles would help increase the mobility of women students in the campus. The confidence they would gain from this experience would help them later in their life as well, he added. UAF Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said that female students rode bicycles in the varsity’s campus in the 70s but this practice declined with the passage of time. He said that the university was making all-out efforts to empower women and provide them state-of-the-art facilities. He said that with the funding of the Punjab government, the country’s largest hostel for 1,000 girls was near to complete. He said that we had set up working women hostel, Day Care Center, five hostels at Postgraduate Agriculture Research Station and many others to facilitate girls’ students. He urged the women to play their active role in socio-eco**mic activities, which was prerequisite to compete with the rest of the world. He said that the UAF was running various projects with the USAID aimed at women empowerment. He said that without active participation of women, the dream of development could **t be fulfilled. The UAF VC said that the women faculty members at the UAF had increased fourfold in eight years as they were 35 in 2008 and **w they were 150, adding that 45 per cent of our enrolled students were girls.
