BEIJING: The Sindh government and China Urban Elected Company signed an agreement on Thursday for 26.5 kilometres Karachi mass transit project of Rs14.4 billion under the public-private partnership with 104 buses.
Secretary Sindh Transport Talha Farooqi signed the agreement for ‘Yellow Line’ bus service with the chief executive of China Urban Elected Company.Minister for Transport Syed Nasir Hussain was also present in the signing ceremony.
The expenses of the Yellow Line project are being shared by the Sindh government by 14 percent and the construction company — China Urban Elected Company — by 16 percent together with a loan of 70 percent from the Chinese financial institutions that would be arranged by the company.
“The Yellow Line project has to be completed within two years and the Chinese company has given guarantees to finish the job in time,” said Nasir Hussain, who is in Beijing to sign the agreement with the Chinese company.
Besides, the Yellow Line, he said the Blue and Red line projects were included in the Sindh government’s initiatives while the Green Line was a federal project. “The Asian Development Bank and a German bank are assisting the government in the projects,” he said. He said the Sindh government will also launch an intra-city project first at divisional level in Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Larkana and Benazirabad and then replicate it at the district level. He said that motor vehicle inspection was to be outsourced in Sindh like Punjab and it was delayed because the Police Department had obtained a stay over the issue but **w it had been resolved.
The agreement is part of the Sindh government’s Karachi mass transit programme that includes six bus rapid transport corridors, two mass rapid transit corridors and revitalisation of the Karachi Circular Railway. The bus rapid transport corridor will have five lines tagged as ‘green line (17 km), orange line (3.9 km), yellow line (26.5 km), blue line (38 km) and red line (22 km).
The Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transport is part of the six bus rapid transport corridors that were proposed by Japan International Cooperation Agency to improve the traffic situation in Karachi.
