“The public should ask such persons as to why they allowed the country to plunge into darkness,” said Nawaz Sharif. He said that his government had **t only been looking at producing electricity but also making efforts to produce electricity in abundance and at cheaper rates.
He said at present the electricity production units were being established in every part of the country. These units had **t just been working to end power loadshedding but also playing their part in improving other institutions.
The prime minister said that Pakistan had been making progress owing to the policies of his government while the outside world had also ack**wledged this eco**mic progress. He said that at present the Pakistan Stock Exchange was considered among the 10 best stock markets of the world.
The prime minister said that the last time when he had visited the PSX, the stock exchange index was at 31,000 points, which had **w surpassed the 40,000 mark. He said that when his government had come to power, the stock exchange index had been at 19,000 points. “God willing, the stock exchange will keep on increasing every time we come to power as (my) entire team deserves the credit for bringing an improvement in the stock exchange,” he said.
Nawaz said that his government had been trying to improve the institutions and all the institutions would soon be improved. He said the policy adopted in 1972 to nationalise the national institutions had caused a massive damage to the country’s eco**my. “But the policy of privatisation was adopted in 1991 to start once again the efforts to fix the national eco**my and institutions while several people advised the government **t to do so. But despite this, we adopted the policy of privatisation and today the national eco**my has been moving ahead in the right direction,” he said.
The prime minister said the country’s foreign exchange reserves had soared to the highest level in its history while collection of tax revenue had increased by 60 percent. He said that there was a need to increase exports from Pakistan and in this regard consideration was being given to increase incentives for exporters.
Nawaz Sharif said that his government had been working to strengthen the structure of Pakistan Railways while work was also on to bring an improvement in the Pakistan International Airlines.
He said that a motorway being built between Karachi and Hyderabad would be completed next year while the groundbreaking for building the Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway would soon be held. “This is the same motorway that will go from Karachi to Peshawar and later till the Kunjerab (pass),” he said.
He said that owing to efforts of his government, the issue of **t only power loadshedding would be resolved but shortage of natural gas in the country would also be overcome. He said the private sector should work along with the government for securing eco**mic development in the country. The government had been taking steps to ensure further improvement in the business friendly environment.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that the construction of China-Pakistan Eco**mic Corridor (CPEC) project would provide a favourable environment to exporters of the country. The PM stated this in a meeting with Karachi's rice exporters here at the residence of Chairman of Board of Investment (BoI) Dr Miftah Ismail. The BoI chairman on the occasion briefed the PM on the issue of rice exports from Pakistan.
The PM said that both eco**mic progress and exports from the country were inter-linked and his government could **t tolerate that the country’s exports were being ig**red. He said the infrastructure was being improved so that exporters could get access to international markets. He said the special eco**mic zone being established under the CPEC would further benefit exporters of business commodities from the country.
He said the railway system had been improved on the countrywide scale and the railway network would be further upgraded with completion of the CPEC project. Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, expressing his serious concern on prolonged loadshedding all over Sindh, particularly in the rural areas, said it **t only affected the day-to-day life but had also badly destroyed the business activities.
The CM was speaking at the exporters meeting held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the residence of Chairman Board of Investment Dr. Miftah Ismail. The chief minister said that it was quite painful that prolonged loadshedding in the province, particularly in the areas of SEPCO (Sukkur Electric Power Company) and HESCO (Hyderabad Electric Supply Company), had caused problems for the people. "Temperatures in southern and **rthern parts of Sindh are still high and on top of it, prolonged power outages and burning of transformers and reluctance of concerned authorities to replace them are some serious issues," he said.
The CM added that the prime minister should take a serious view of the situation and direct the authorities concerned to be rational in their approach. He also raised the issue of inflated electricity bills being given to the poor people in rural areas. The people living in a house of two rooms have to pay a huge bill. "I k**w the power rates are high but it doesn’t mean the poor people are fleeced," he said and added that HESCO and SEPCO deliberately don’t install meters in slum areas and allow illegal power connections. This system ends up further increasing corruption, he said.
Murad Ali Shah reiterated his stance that the solution of serious power crisis of the country lies in Sindh. "We have huge coal deposits to generate electricity and also Sindh has vast wind and solar energy corridors," he said and added Sindh just needs the support and cooperation of the prime minister to generate electricity.
The prime minister assured the chief minister that he would extend his full support to Thar coal and renewable energy projects in the province and had already directed the Ministry of Water & Power to decide tariff and other related issues. He also assured the Sindh government that he would direct the authorities concerned to reduce duration of power loadshedding.
