Six vehicles torched by ‘unk**wn people’
KARACHI: Two people were wounded in a clash between two political groups in the Khokhrapar area during polling for re-election to a provincial assembly seat, PS-127, while unk**wn miscreants torched six vehicles in different parts of the city on Thursday.
Two people suffered injuries when gunmen opened fire near a camp of a political party outside a polling station in Khokhrapar. The injured, identified as Mukhtar, 65, and MQM activist Asif, 40, were taken to a nearby hospital. Later, police arrested Asif.
After the incident, law enforcers reached the spot and arrested nine workers belonging to the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan. Afzal Koti, a sector in-charge of the MQM-Haqiqi, was among the arrested men.
Meanwhile, unk**wn miscreants in the wee hours of Thursday reappeared in the city and torched three buses in Lyari’s Napier area, Buffer Zone’s Sector 15-A and Sharafi Goth police limits respectively.
Later in the day, miscreants set on fire a truck in the Federal B. Industrial Area, a coaster in Landhi **6 and a minibus on the National Highway near the Manzil Pump. Fire tenders rushed to the affected locations to put out the flames. However, ** casualties were reported in the incidents.
A case was lodged against a unit in-charge of the MQM and two workers of the party in connection with the arson attack that took place in the morning. The case was registered on behalf of a bus owner, police said.
The Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, took **tice of the arson attacks and sought a report from Inspector General of Police AD Khowaja. He said miscreants who set the vehicles on fire would **t be spared and would be dealt with an iron hand. He said those days when arson attacks and other crimes were committed in the city with impunity had gone.
The provincial police chief an**unced Rs100,000 reward for anyone informing the police about the names of miscreants who had torched the vehicles. The Karachi Police chief, Mushtaq Maher, said the miscreants who were torching vehicles had political motives. He vowed that those responsible would be arrested on Thursday night or by Friday.
In a statement, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Rabita Committee condemned the arson attacks, saying it deemed the attacks an effort to spread the unrest in the metropolis. The MQM also called for the immediate arrest of those involved in burning the vehicles.
