‘Rs45 billion spent in Larkana in last eight years’
KARACHI: Sindh Minister and head of the Sindh coordination committee of Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Nisar Ahmed Khuhro on Wednesday said that an old petition filed in the superior judiciary was being used as a pretext for media trial of the PPP and its leadership. The Sindh Minister Nisar Khuhro was speaking at a press conference to respond to the remarks directed towards the PPP leadership after the Sindh High Court heard the application regarding the alleged embezzlement of funds pertaining to the Larkana Development Package.
The provincial minister said that the leadership of PPP had been virtually indicted on the basis of an application written on a plain piece of paper and submitted to the superior court. He said the person, who submitted the application to the Sindh High Court, didn’t even attach a single piece evidence to prove the veracity of his claim. He said the PPP, during the hearing of the application, had been unjustly blamed that the party didn’t even spare Larkana, which was considered as the stronghold of the party. “We do ho**ur the judiciary but the due process of justice has to be done,” he added.
Khuhro said that the PPP ho**urs all the state institutions since all the institutions were important for Pakistan. “For sake of sanctity of these institutions, we the public representatives have rendered innumerable sacrifices and saved them from dictatorship,” said the minister.
“We took bullets for the sake of judiciary and we made efforts for restoration of judiciary,” he added. The provincial minister said there was ** basis to the claim that Rs90 billion had been allocated for development package of Larkana as only Rs45 billion were allocated for different development schemes in Larkana.
He said that some 4,000 development schemes were completed in Larkana. He said the PPP considered the entire country as its home and there was ** cause for calling Larkana as the hometown of the PPP. Khuhro said it was completely unjust to allege that PPP’s elected representatives from the area resorted to corruption when the funds had **t been released so far.
He said the media trial of PPP started even before the allegations were proved. Adverse remarks have been made against the PPP on basis of an application, which was originally submitted to the superior court in 2013 but hearing was done by the judiciary after a gap of three years, he added. Khuhro said the applicant, instead of making the Sindh government a party in the case, had made public representatives as parties to the issue, which was in fact an attempt to malign him and the PPP leader, including MNA Faryal Talpur.
He said that allegations regarding corruption in the development package of Rs90 billion had been leveled without any evidence, while false news items were also published in this regard. He said it was due on the part of prosecution to prove its case with proof. He said the former prime ministerYousuf Raza Gilani during his tenure had an**unced Rs10 billion package for Larkana and Rs5 billion of this package were provided by the federal govt. He said that there was ** truth to the statement that the Larkana Development Package amounted to Rs90 billion.
He said it was unjust on the part of the petitioners to level allegations of embezzlement against the public representatives since members of the assemblies were **t authorized to issue work orders or do inspection of development work.
Sindh Information Adviser Moula Bux Chandio said that justice could **t be done in any case after hearing a single party. He said that during the last eight years, Rs45 billon were spent on the development work in Larkana and out of which Rs25 billon were spent by the Federation.
He said the petitioner in the case should visit the town to witness the development of the projects as PPP’s provincial govt started 4,945 development schemes in Larkana. He said the public representatives of the PPP, belonging to Larkana, were wrongly accused when it were the provincial governments’ departments that do the development. The MPAs and MNAs were supposed to do recommendations only, he concluded.
