NA speaker’s ruling on references

ISLAMABAD: All the political parties in the joint opposition will meet today (Thursday) to chalk out a plan of action against the ruling of the National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, rejecting the references against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The opposition parties’ meeting has been convened following a meeting between the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Wednesday.

Talking to journalists after the meeting, Khursheed Shah said the NA speaker should remain impartial in making decisions. He said the speaker had rejected the references filed by the opposition; however, he did **t mention the reasons.

Shah added the speaker should respect his designation and remain neutral. Challenging the ruling of the speaker in the court is a common practice and the opposition will chalk out a plan in this regard according to law and the Constitution, Khursheed Shah asserted.

He said Speaker Ayaz Sadiq did **t tell the reasons for against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The speaker should respect his position and stay neutral, Khursheed Shah said. The opposition leader cited the example of former Speaker Dr Fahmida Mirza and said that she had given reasons when she had rejected references against the then PM Yusuf Raza Gillani.

The opposition would adopt a plan of action against the speaker's ruling in accordance with the Constitution and law, Khursheed Shah said, adding that according to tradition, the ruling should be challenged in court. He said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's references had also been rejected, hence the PTI should make a decision too.

Khursheed Shah said that he had called a meeting of leaders of the opposition parties on Thursday to discuss the matter.

Speaking on the occasion, Shah Mehmood Qureshi said PTI Chief Imran Khan will present his viewpoint in the lower House on Thursday.

NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq on Monday rejected all the four references seeking Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's disqualification from the NA membership for allegedly violating articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution in the wake of revelations made in the Panama Papers.

The NA speaker had received eight references out of which four were filed against Nawaz Sharif, two against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, one against Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai and one against PTI leader Jehangir Tareen.

Ayaz Sadiq rejected and returned the Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed's reference stating that his 182 page reference contains insufficient evidence against the prime minister, thus he can**t be disqualified.
