Kiln workers’ hunger strike enters 6th day

TOBA TEK SINGH: A hunger strike of kiln workers demanding implementation of a government **tification on wages entered the 6th day on Saturday.

Bhatta Mazdoor Union (BMU) district leader Muhammad Shabbir and other workers want implementation of the Punjab government’s **tification of minimum wages of Rs 1,036 per 1,000 bricks for kiln workers. Reportedly, Shabbir became unconscious in the evening and Rescue 1122 shifted him to DHQ Hospital. On Thursday, he was brought to DHQ hospital unconscious and was discharged after two hours. BMU women wing president Sajida Perveen told reporters that workers’ four representatives held talks with Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Shafique and then with DCO Amer Ijaz Akbar on Friday and they were asked to end the strike. She said they had promised that a joint reconciliation meeting between workers and owners would be arranged in the DCO ****** but the workers refused to end the strike.
