According to Spoon & Tamago (http://www.spoon-tamago.com/2013/11/19/internet-cats-are-reborn-as-embroideries-peeking-out-of-shirts/), Kutoba started making the shirts because her son was slim and had trouble fitting into store-bought clothes. She started adding cats to the shirts after her son, a big fan of internet cats, requested it.*
