DG Lt Gen Asim Bajwa urges media to avoid speculation; says ** discrimination between good
or bad terrorists; those speaking against Pakistan unacceptable; practice of closing Karachi on a phone call ended; Daesh’s ingress into Pakistan foiled

ISLAMABAD: Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lt Gen Asim Bajwa said on Thursday the COAS had already made a categorical an**uncement of his unwillingness to get an extension in his tenure as the army chief. He said the position about the extension of General Raheel hadalready been cleared and if there is any change people will be informed. He urged the media to avoid speculations about the extension of General Raheel’s service.

Asim Bajwa said operation is being carried out against the militants without any discrimination between the good or bad terrorists. The DG ISPR said those speaking against Pakistan will **t be tolerated and the tradition of closing Karachi on one phone call has come to an end.

The ISPR top official said attempt of Islamic State (Daesh) to ingress into Pakistan has been foiled. He said Daesh Pakistan commander Hafiz Umer was among those 309 apprehended who were trying to establish Daesh network in Pakistan. He said Hafiz Umar killed 15 law enforcement agencies’ personnel and injured seven in Karachi and Hyderabad. He said the Daesh commander was also involved in attacks on two private TV channels in Faisalabad in **vember and December 2015 respectively.

The DG ISPR said a**ther commander of Daesh in Pakistan, Ali Rehman killed 14 LEAs personnel and injured five in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Faisalabad. He was the target killer of Sabeen Mehmood. Asim Bajwa also gave names of various Daesh operatives involved in terrorist attacks on TV channels in different cities of the country.

Asim Bajwa said the miscreants apprehended include 21 operators associated with planning wing and 106 militants, including 25 Afghans and other foreigners, and 157 free-lancers and smaller groups. They also included some persons who were hired for a meagre amount on daily basis for carrying out wall-chalking for Daesh. He maintained that Daesh had **t been able to make inroads into Pakistan. “Our society also did **t accept the phe**mena and they have **t been able to get space in our country,” the DG ISPR said.

Asim Bajwa disclosed that in the course of investigations, it was revealed that the miscreants having association with Daesh were planning to attack the Foreign ******, public figures, political personalities, prominent media persons and Islamabad Airport.

At the same time, the ISPR DG pointed out that presence of Daesh in three provinces of Afghanistan, Kunar, Khost and Nangarhar, was still a challenge and worrying factor for Pakistan. He recalled that in January 2015, six Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leaders pledged allegiance to Daesh from Nangarhar through a video release. Commander Hafiz Saeed Khan was **minated as the leader of Daesh in the video message.

General Bajwa while giving updates on Zarb-e-Azb said after making significant achievements from the operation, they would **w focus on proper border management. “We are planning to erect 18 gates (crossing points) and around 100 FC check posts regulate and monitor movement across Pak Afghan border,” he said.

He told media persons that in order to control illegal movement across the border, entry to Khyber Agency and Orakzai Agency from Afghanistan through four passes had been sealed. He expressed hope that implementation of the National Action Plan ((NAP) would be expedited which was also required to consolidate gains from the Zarb-e-Azb operation.

General Bajwa particularly mentioned that Zarb-e-Azb operation had cost Pakistan 106.98 billion dollars while 537 personnel of security forces, including 18 ******rs, 35 JCOs and 484 jawans embraced Shahadat and 3,500 terrorists were also killed.

“Those doubting Pakistan’s war efforts to crush terrorism should have a look at sacrifices of Pakistan in terms of eco**mic and human losses,” he said.

On statement of the US secretary of state given in India in which he stressed Pakistan to do more, he said operation was carried out against terrorists without any discrimination, adding that operations were also conducted against Afghan Taliban and Haqqani network. “The purpose of the Zarb-e-Azb was zero tolerance to violence and terrorism,” he said, adding that the determination was clear that Pakistan is doing it for itself and **t for anybody else. He said if anybody was saying that **thing had been done then he was wrong.

The DG ISPR said the world should understand two challenges being faced by Pakistan - firstly, the 2,600 kilometres long border with Afghanistan and presence of two to three million Afghan refugees in the country. “It is also a challenge for us if there are some miscreants under the cover of refugees,” he said.

He mentioned that prior to start of operation Zarb-e-Azb, all the stakeholders including Afghan authorities were also informed but he regretted that ** proper cooperation was provided from there. However, he said the cooperation between two sides would improve in the days to come and there was also a will in this connection from the other side.

He said that during the operation, huge quantity of IEDs, explosives and ammunition were recovered from Taliban which was sufficient for them to carrying out terrorist activities for the next 21 years.

Responding to a question about Rangers operation in Punjab, Asim Bajwa said that intelligence based operations (IBOs) and combing operations have been conducted across the country including Punjab. “The scope of operations and strength will be widened and enhanced wherever required,” he said. He pointed out that IBOs and combing operations had already been conducted in Punjab including one recent operation in Faisalabad in which six terrorists including two high-value targets belonging to al-Qaeda were arrested.

He told journalists that since June, 2014 a total of 21,383 IBOs have been conducted in which 31,400 arrests were made. Bajwa said Pakistan had raised the issue of nexus between Afghan intelligence agency NDS and Indian intelligence agency RAW at many forums.
