TIMERGARA: Three people, including two policemen, were killed and a passerby sustained injuries when unidentified armed men sprayed a vehicle with bullets near a police checkpost in Rabat, Lower Dir, on Monday, official sources said.
The sources said that unidentified gunmen opened fire on the vehicle of Muhammad Suhail Khan, brother of the district council member Shad Nawaz Khan, killing him on the spot. They said the accused also opened fire on the cops identified as Hawaldar Fazal Wahab and Zubair Khan, who tried to intercept them at the police checkpost in Rabat Bazaar.
As a result, both cops instantly died while a passerby identified as Huzaifa sustained bullet wounds, the sources added. Meanwhile, police cordoned off the area and started a search operation for the assailants. The motive behind the killing couldn’t be ascertained. The funeral prayer of the two slain cops was offered at the Police Lines in Timergara.
Deputy Inspector General of Police, Malakand, Akhtar Hayat, Commandant Dir Task Force, Colonel Khalid Mehmood Shafi, local government representatives and a large number of local people attended the funeral prayers.
According to local sources, one of the assailants who had jumped into the Panjkora River after being hit by bullets when the cops returned the fire was also arrested in an injured condition by the police. However, the arrest couldn’t be confirmed by the police officials.
