PESHAWAR: A three-day anti-polio campaign will begin in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) today.
Children in all the 604 union councils and 67 camps of displaced persons and Afghan refugee camps in 13 high risk districts would be vaccinated against polio.Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) Coordinator Akbar Khan said that a total of 3,644,000 children below five years age would be vaccinated in the three-day drive.
For this purpose, he said, 12,059 teams of trained health workers had been formed. He said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government was committed to eradicating polio from the province. Meanwhile, the three-day anti-polio campaign will also begin in Fata and the Frontier Regions today.
The campaign will be followed by catch-up of missed children, under the supervision and security provided by political agents, commissioners and security forces, said an official communiqué.In the entire Fata and Frontier Regions, 1,033,554 children below the age of five years will be vaccinated by 3,939 teams, comprising 3,550 mobile teams, 289 fixed teams and 100 transit teams.
The campaign is focused on reaching and vaccination every child for ultimate polio eradication. Fata has so far reported only one polio case in 2016 compared to 16 polio cases in 2015. First polio case of the year in Fata was reported in June 2016 from South Waziristan, in response to which 105,430 children were vaccinated in South Waziristan during door-to-door campaign in July 2016.
