Terms accusation ‘speculative and unsubstantiated;’ it is just **t possible to tamper with record of a taxpayer

ISLAMABAD: Without mentioning name of PTI Chief Imran Khan, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on Wednesday expressed its deep concern regarding unfounded allegation of ‘fixing’ tax record of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family members by two senior ******rs of FBR.

In the August 14 Islamabad public rally, the PTI Chief Imran Khan had named two FBR senior officials including Member Inland Revenue (IR) operation Dr Irshad and Special Assistant (SA) to Chairman FBR, Amjad Tawana for fixing the tax records of PM Nawaz Sharif and his family members.

According to statement issued by the FBR on Wednesday the Board expressed its serious concern regarding unfounded allegations of ‘fixing’ tax record of Prime Minister of Pakistan Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and his family members by two senior ******rs of FBR.

The allegations were leveled during a post mid-night political rally in the capital on Sunday. The allegations are strongly denied as being mere speculative and unsubstantiated.

The FBR, according to the statement, considers the tax record of all taxpayers as a sacred trust and under section 216 of Income Tax Ordinance, 2001, it can**t be shared with unauthorised persons.

FBR has fool-proof automated processes for record maintenance and updating. ** individual can alter, edit or modify the record except as provided under the law and standard operating procedure. Record is stored in secure database and any access to the same is automatically recorded by the system.

“There is thus ** question of tampering with the record in any manner whatsoever,” the FBR made it clear and added that the allegations were totally false and baseless and constituted an attempt to bring two very competent, honest and senior ******rs of FBR enjoying impeccable reputation of integrity and professional competence to disrepute and can demoralise and discourage the employees of FBR who had just recently been successful in making an unprecedented accomplishment of surpassing a massive collection target of Rs3,104 billion during financial year 2015-16.

The statement further said that the FBR expects that while issuing such statements our political leaders would consider the adverse impact such statements have on the individual’s reputation in the society and the morale of national institutions.

The employees of FBR feel disheartened and demoralised. It would be in the best national interest if such allegations are retracted and FBR is allowed to continue performing its functions and duties in a **n-partisan manner, the statement concluded.
