ISLAMABAD: Leader of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Maulana Fazlur Rehman on a point of order in the National Assembly on Wednesday raised the issue of anchorpersons of some television channels calling him and other parliamentarians traitors, saying that they had been elected by patriotic people. “Who has given the authority to them to call us traitors?” he asked.

He asked the speaker to being leveled by some anchorpersons as he was custodian of the House. Fazlur Rehman also called upon Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who at that time was sitting in the House to take **tice of the situation and give directions to the chairman of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra).

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq said that he had already given directions to Pemra chairman to take **tice of contents of such programmes. Meanwhile, the National Assembly deferred the Prevention of Electronics Crimes Bill, 2016 following strong protest from the opposition members and later due to lack of quorum in the House.

The controversial legislation already passed by the National Assembly was amended by the Senate with passage of 50 amendments and sent back to Lower House of the Parliament. As Minister of State for Information Tech**logy and Telecommunication Anusha Rehman Khan wanted to move the bill for passage, the PPP parliamentary leader Syed Naveed Qamar said that various clauses of the bill were contrary to the Constitution and **where in the world such a law was being practiced.

Other opposition members Dr Nafeesa Shah, Ali Muhammad Khan and Syed Ali Raza Abidi also spoke against the proposed legislation suggesting the government to create consensus on it. They said the Electronic Crimes Bill had been opposed by the political circles, civil society and internet service providers. They were of the view there could be misuse of the legislation if it is passed in the present shape.

They said that the law would be challenged in the court if it is passed by the Parliament. “ Children with minimum age can also be punished under this proposed law,” he said. As discussion was in progress on the bill, the proceedings were suspended for Maghrib prayers. The PPP parliamentarian Imran Zafar Leghari pointed out lack of quorum in the House soon after the break and proceedings were adjourned till today (Thursday).
