Terrorists changing targets other than state institutions out of desperation

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday emphasised seamless coordination among the law-enforcement agencies and the federal and provincial governments to achieve optimum results within the shortest-possible time in the war against terrorism and militancy.

He was chairing a high-echelon meeting at the Prime Minister’s House to review the internal security situation and implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP).

Minster for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and National Security Adviser (NSA) to the Prime Minister Lt Gen (R) Nasser Khan Janjua briefed the prime minister about the focus of terrorist organisations on the soft targets.

Minister for Finance Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi, Secretary to the Prime Minister (SPM) Fawad Hasan Fawad and other senior government officials attended the meeting.

The meeting observed that after the achievement of successful results from operation Zarb-e-Azb in Fata, terrorists were **w changing their targets other than the state institutions out of desperation.

“The country is in a state of war with an ill-conceived ideology wanting to force change of our way of life which is in sheer contradiction to the ideology that became the basis for creation of Pakistan,” he said.

He assured the nation that the government was committed to taking all necessary steps to ensure that the blood spilled in Quetta carnage would **t go to waste. “We will secure Pakistan from all types of terrorism and extremism; the country has embarked upon a right track and we will enable every citizen to reap the benefits of a secure, stable and prosperous Pakistan,” he said.

He said terrorists thought they could sow the seeds of disharmony and disunity in the ranks of the nation. “The nation is united and supports the government to stay on the course of completely eliminating the terrorists from the Pakistani society,” he added.

Nawaz decided to call for a broader meeting on Wednesday (today) for detailed discussions on the NAP. It is expected that Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif and chiefs of intelligence gathering outfits will also attend the slated meeting.

It is understood that General Raheel will also brief the prime minister about the outcome of the meeting of corps commander that was held on Tuesday at the GHQ. Some important decisions would be taken in the today’s meeting, the sources hinted.

Meanwhile, in a meeting with Haji Ghulam Ahmed Bilour MNA here at the PM House, Nawaz said terrorists must k**w that the process for elimination of terrorism through Zarb-e-Azb and the National Action Plan was irreversible. He said terrorists were attacking the pillars of democracy but the entire nation was united against them with an unflinching resolve.

“Their attack in Quetta is an indication that they hate and target every institution which is an integral part of our polity,” the prime minister said. He said terrorists wanted to attack the state and the society through their perverted ideology. The prime minister said Pakistan was satisfactorily advancing towards a strong, eco**mically vibrant and politically stable future.
