Raheel meets Chinese army chief; witnesses anti-terror exercise

ISLAMABAD: A high-level meeting on Quadrilateral Cooperation and Coordination Mechanism in counterterrorism by armed forces/militaries (the mechanism herein after referred to as the QCCM) of Afghanistan, China, Pakistan and Tajikistan was held in Urumqi, the Xingjian Uygur auto**mous region of China, on August 3.

Qadam Shah Shahim, the CGS Afghan National Army, General Fang Fenghui, the Chief of Joint Staff Department of Central Military Commission (CMC), General Raheel Sharif, the COAS of the Pakistan Army, and Major General EA Cobidrzoda, the First Deputy Defence Minister and CGS Tajikistan armed forces, participated in the meeting, said ISPR.

The participants unanimously agreed that terrorism and extremism are serious threats to regional stability and they fully appreciated the unremitting efforts taken by the militaries of the four countries against the forces of terrorism and extremism. They reiterated to cooperate for tackling these forces for peace and stability of all member countries.

They agreed to establish the QCCM to coordinate and provide mutual support limited to four countries only in the fields of counterterrorism, situation evaluation, clue verification, intelligence sharing, capacity building, joint training exercises and personnel training. It was also agreed that all decisions reached by the QCCM would be based on mutual consultation and consensus.

The parties agreed that the QCCM should adhere to the principles of UN charter and other universally-recognised principles and **rms of international law, especially those on maintaining peace and security, safeguarding independence and equality with mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual **n-aggression and **n-interference in each other’s internal affairs.

It was emphasised that formation of the QCCM was **t targeted against any other state or international organisation. The ISPR said General Raheel Sharif, who arrived in Urumqi, China, for a daylong visit held meetings with Chief of General Staff Gen Fang of People’s Liberation Army. During the meeting, they discussed military-to-military relations, bilateral security cooperation and all dimensions of long term CPEC security.

It said the COAS also held separate meeting with Party Secretary Xinkiang province Mr. Zhang Chun Xian in Urumqi on Wednesday. Their talks covered the Pak-China bilateral relations and regional security issue with particular reference to CPEC’s completion and security. The COAS flew to witness counter terrorism exercise in Kuerla (Korla) training base of People’s Liberation Army (PLA). The exercise encompassed a very effective neutralisation of a terrorists’ base in a remote mountai**us region employing all the modern aerial and ground equipment and gadgets. The COAS appreciated PLA troops for their skills and enhanced abilities to counter all categories of terrorism.

The COAS also witnessed the Chinese military equipment display.
