PleuraFlow for Pediatric CT Surgery Clears Chest Tubes of Clots

ClearFlow, an Anaheim, CA firm, has developed and **w*making available a pediatric version of its PleuraFlow Active Tube Clearance device. Designed for use post cardiothoracic surgery, the PleuraFlow makes sure that chest tubes don’t clog up.

Narrower tubes used for peds are particularly susceptible to obstruction and the new FDA indication permits such tubes to be used with the pediatric version of the PleuraFlow.
The tech**logy relies on a looped guidewire that is contained inside the tube. A slider on the outside contains magnets that pull on the guidewire and make it slide along, clearing any internal obstructions that build up. These naturally slide toward the drainage system to be disposed of.
It’s pretty easy to use and doesn’t require sticking catheters inside or breaking sterility, while letting clinicians quickly prevent and stop developed clogs.

In a study published in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, smaller 20 Fr chest tubes fitted with Active Clearance Tech**logy cleared blood significantly better than larger 32 Fr chest tubes without active clearance tech**logy. This was the first time it was demonstrated that smaller tubes can drain better than larger tubes if the lumen is preventatively kept clear of clot. The FDA recently cleared a 20 Fr System with 4 side holes, which is ideally suited for infant, preadolescent, and adolescent patients undergoing congenital cardiac surgery. This System is also available in a 20 Fr with 6 side holes, as well as 24 Fr System when needed for larger pediatric patients.
