** ransom was paid to kidnappers; hope kept him
alive during the hardest days of his life

LONDON: Former prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani’s son Ali Haider Gilani said that he would have never been released if Pakistan Army had **t moved on Feb 29 this year towards the posts of entrenched militants in Waziristan as part of the operation Zarb-e-Azb.

Ali Haider Gilani is visiting Britain for vacation with his extended family to celebrate his release from the three years long captivity of al-Qaeda and Taliban militants after being kidnapped from his hometown of Multan.

He showered praise on the military chief for taking on the militants and playing vital role in securing his safe recovery.

Speaking to Geo News here, Haider Gilani said that during his recent meeting with Pakistan Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, he thanked him for the movement of troops against the militants on that particular day because fearing Pakistani forces the al-Qaeda and Taliban militants moved Haider to Afghanistan where he was eventually rescued.

“After the February 29 advance movement of Pakistani forces, I was taken to Afghanistan. When I met General Raheel Sharif I thanked him if there was ** operation on February 29, I wouldn’t be here today.”

The militants were on the run and had ** desire to fight Pakistani forces.

Haider Gilani said that he met General Sharif for one hour and fifteen minutes and answered the military chief’s questions about Taliban and al-Qaeda.

“We didn’t discuss politics. Raheel Sharif was very happy. He said, “My son has been released.’ I told General Raheel Sharif what Taliban thought of him. I told him Taliban only fear him. On Eid and every month or so, Taliban were terrified when General Raheel visited Wana, Mir Ali, Datakhel. I used to tell Taliban about his visits because I had access to radio and they were terrified. It was hugely demoralising for the Taliban that Pakistan Army chief was coming near them.”

Haider Gilani said that three years of captivity was the hardest time of his life.

“To live was difficult but to die was easy. I lived in extremely tough conditions. For two years I remained in chains and for 14 months and 22 days I didn’t see light of the day. To keep myself sane I used to write diary. I had written two codes on the wall of my cell: This too shall pass and victory comes with patience. Two days after being kidnapped, I realised that it would be a long fight and I must **t lose hope. Hope is the last thing that leaves the body. I didn’t lose hope and survived,” he said.

Haider Gilani firmly denied paying any ransom to his militant kidnappers.

He said that the militants wanted a huge amount of ransom and also wanted exchange of prisoners.

“They were clear in what they were doing. They wanted revenge from my father Yusuf Raza Gilani. They blamed Pakistan People’s Party for the killing of Osama Bin Laden, operations against militants in Wana, Waziristan and Swat. They were angry at the PPP government. “They thought my kidnapping would help them,” he said.

Ali Haider Gilani said that he was subjected to extreme mental and psychological torture so that he could be broken down.

“There was ** physical torture but the biggest of all the torture was that the kidnappers kept me away from my family and friends for three years and had me in chains.

“They thought they would break me down mentally but Alhamdullilah I am stronger than ever before.”

Gilani said that during his conversations with the militants he asked them to go for peace talks but they bragged about themselves and said that Pakistan Army could **t do anything to them “but they ran away like rats when the operation started”.

Ali Haider Gilani told Geo News that he feared being killed all the time from different sides. “I feared I would become a collateral damage. It was dangerous for me all the time. There was danger of Amrican drone strikes, Afghan forces shelled militants, Pakistan shelled them and they fought with one a**ther, too. Many times I thought I would die but I didn’t lose hope.”

Ali Haider Gilani said that he missed his mother and son the most. “I missed my family a lot. My son was only one-and-a-half-year old when I was kidnapped. It was the most amazing day of my life when I met my family in Lahore. I missed my son’s first day at school and missed his three birthdays.

About his future plans, Ali Haider Gilani said that he was currently writing a book on his captivity. “As far as politics is concerned, I will do whatever my leader Bilawal Bhutto Zardari asks me to do.”

“The most difficult time for me was that for more than a year I was **t able to see the sky and light. I had a clock with me which didn’t have AM or PM. I didn’t k**w whether it was day or night. I didn’t k**w whether to sleep or **t. For one year the light was kept on and that was the most difficult thing. I lost track of the time and I was lost. That was the most difficult thing.”

Ali Haider Gilani told Geo News that he was kidnapped by the Punjabi al-Qaeda, then he was handed over to al-Qaeda (Arabs and Afghans) and the third and last transition was to Pakistani Taliban.

Ali Haider Gilani said that his father Yusuf Raza Gilani is his role model. “My father never lost hope. He is a very courageous man who never lost hope.

He is a patient man and he is my role model.”
