ISLAMABAD: The trouncing of coup in Turkey sent a resoundingly telling message across the globe especially in countries, where a handful of elements even in this changed world have such highly despicable tendencies and ambitions, that the unflinching will and resolve of people has the power to annihilate such attempts.
Unfortunately, Pakistan is one of those states where such crass talk is occasionally heard and projected by a set of insane bunch that needs to be dealt with sternly as per the constitutional and legal calls. The display of posters calling for imposition of martial law was the latest apt example, reflecting the approach of such fetid minds.
Maybe because of this illegal ‘narrative’, bandied about by a minuscular mi**rity in Pakistan, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was the first world leader, who strongly condemned the attempt to undermine democracy in Turkey by a failed coup attempt, and clearly and unequivocally stood by elected leadership and people of Turkey. His statement came before mid-day on Saturday when the revolt was yet to be totally crushed.
“We deeply admire the resolve of the brave and resilient Turkish people, who stood up against the forces of darkness and anarchy to express their support and commitment to democracy. We express our complete support and solidarity with President Tayyip Erdogan, the democratically elected government of Turkey and the democratic institutions of Turkey.”
However, popular power and appeal that President Erdogan enjoys for having taken Turkey to new heights of development, progress and prosperity thwarted the coup d’état. Democracy was at its best in the entire history of Turkey, where military interventions had been successful in the past. People’s power was demonstrated **t about Erdogan but democracy.
According to an eyewitness account received by this correspondent from Turkey from a contact, within minutes of Erdogan’s call to come out on the streets and take on the coup makers, streets erupted with thousands of people. The streets and squares of Istanbul, a city of 17 million people, were thronged by masses. Social media and Face Time played a key role.
The traditional modality of capturing state TV to make the revolt successful failed, the account said. As per this description, Erdogan and present and former prime ministers addressed people and media through Face Time. The United States and European Union (EU) were caught double-minded and failed to take a clear position. It looked like the US and EU were giving a tacit approval of coup since they don’t like strong Muslim leaders, it opined.
The putschists did capture the army chief, the police headquarters, the state TV, airport and bridges but **t hearts and minds and free media. It is said that Istanbul Mayor Kadir Tobpas and local government representatives played an important role in frustrating the rebellion.
On president’s call, Turks gathered in mosques and everywhere in Istanbul. Mosques were opened and Azan (prayer call) was heard from minarets. Crowds backed by police stopped the march of tanks and took over tanks and army vehicles. All army-men controlled by crowd were formally arrested by police in the streets and taken to police stations.
The version said that the attempted coup was organized simultaneously in more than one city. Direct attack was made on the villa where Erdogan was on vacation near Izmir. The president, however, escaped unhurt and reached Istanbul late night. The rebels used army helicopters but then air force moved against them and they were all grounded.
The western media was all creating alarm and seemed driven by an agenda to justify the coup. It went to the extent of portraying that protesters were supporters of the revolt. However, Al Jazeera and local Turkish channels reported accurately. The democratic West kept sitting on fence.
There were sounds of blasts and firing for a few hours but final mopping up completed by early morning and all was quiet and **rmal in the streets, the account said and added that heartwarming and sightseeing police and civilians arrested army men responsible from the streets.
It said Turkish airport police unlike Pakistan’s Airport Security Force (ASF) has ** connection with the army and Turkish police force is as well-trained and armed as the military.
The narration said that the attempted coup was staged by a group of isolated ******rs. Apart from the Turkish people, all democratic institutions including political parties, opposition etc, opposed the putschists with determination. The media played an exemplary role.
As a whole, Pakistanis were thrilled over the collapse of the putschists for the special love they have for Erdogan, who takes exceptional interest in Pakistan’s development and progress and supports it in the world forums.
Maryam Nawaz tweeted that the brave people of Turkey have established that the sovereign will of people can**t be made a mockery of. Democracy wins. Well done!
Responding to it, a retired army brigadier tweeted that people of Pakistan are also brave but “you will be disappointed to see them distributing sweets once army removes” your government.
She replied: This exactly is the putrid mindset which is on the verge of extinction, hence the disappointment. Maryam’s a**ther post said that the leaders risk their lives to bring peace to their people. “Their lives must be protected. We must **t resent that.”
