LAHORE: Just a few days after an international tribunal had dismissed Beijing's claims pertaining to its ownership of the South China Sea waters, the country might plan to build mobile nuclear power plants in the strategically vital region in 2019.
According to Chinese state-run media claims, the marine power platforms would be constructed to ensure fresh water provision to troops stationed there instead of using boats to deliver barrels of the basic human necessity.
The move, if undertaken, would strengthen the electricity and power system in the South China Sea, which expedite the commercial development in the area.
Quoting the social media account of the China National Nuclear Corporation, an Indian newspaper 'The Hindu' said: “Marine nuclear power platform construction will be used to support China's effective control in the South China Sea. The marine nuclear power platforms will be used in the islands and reefs of the spratly chain in the contested sea to ensure fresh water. The original report was deleted from China National Nuclear Corporation’s account on social media platform ‘WeChat’ on Friday, and a staffer at the firm told AFP that it "needed to confirm" its accuracy.
The key Indian media house has gone on to write: “China has rapidly built up reefs in the sea into artificial islands in recent months, installing civilian and military facilities on them. The report comes after a Permanent Court of Arbitration tribunal on last on Tuesday backed the Philippines' case that there was ** legal basis for Beijing's maritime claims which
extend almost to the coasts of neighbouring states. It also found that China's activities had inflicted severe damage to fragile coral ecosystems and caused serious harm to endangered species. China has insisted that it will ig**re the decision while warning its rivals that increasing pressure on the issue could turn the resource-rich waters into a "cradle of war.”
The Hindu has added: “Beijing included the development of two marine nuclear power plants, to be built by the China National Nuclear Corporation and the China General Nuclear Power Corporation respectively, in its five-year plan for 2016-2020, both companies an**unced this year. It did **t specify where the marine facilities would be constructed.
The China National Nuclear Corporation plant is expected to start operation in 2019, and the China General Nuclear Power Corporation the following year, according to their statements. Nuclear power is already used at sea for aircraft carriers and submarines but doing so for civilian purposes appears to be unprecedented. A similar Russian project is reportedly already under construction.”
