Countrywide curfew an**unced; airports shut; access to social media sites cut off; chief of military staff among hostages being held at military headquarters; country to be run by Peace Council; PM Yildirim says govt still in charge and those responsible will pay highest price



ISTANBUL: The Turkish military Friday said it had seized control of the government, while Prime Minister Binali Yildirim tried to assure the country that the government remained in charge.

In a statement, the military said it was "re-establishing constitutional order" and the country would abide by international agreements. "Turkish armed forces, in order to re-establish constitutional order, democracy, rights and freedoms, rule of law, safety and security of the Turkish nation and the state, has taken over all governmental responsibilities of the Republic of Turkey," an ******r said, reading the military's statement during a telephone interview.

But a Turkish presidential source said the statement made on behalf of armed forces was **t authorised by the military command.

"The government elected by the people remains in charge," Mr. Yildirim said. "This government will only go when the people say so."

"Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim said in comments broadcast by private channel NTV. He said those responsible would pay the highest price.

Airports were shut, access to Internet social media sites Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube was cut off and troops closed off two major bridges over the Bosphorus Strait. Television footage showed military tanks outside Istanbul's Atatürk International Airport.

Reports on social media and in local press described tanks in the streets and military planes and helicopters overhead in Ankara. According to the wire service, NTV showed images of tanks at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport.

TRT state television an**unced a countrywide curfew. An an**uncer read a statement on the orders of the military that accused the government of eroding the democratic and secular rule of law.

The country would be run by a "peace council" that would ensure the safety of the population, the statement said.

The state-run Anadolu news agency said the Chief of Military Staff Hulusi Akar was among people taken "hostage" in the capital Ankara. CNN Turk also reported that hostages were being held at the military headquarters.

US President Barack Obama was briefed on Friday on what the White House called "the unfolding situation" in Turkey.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and other Russian officials called on their countrymen to stay indoors.

US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking jointly after talks in Moscow, both said they hoped bloodshed would be avoided.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said he hoped for stability and continuity in Turkey. Kerry told reporters in Moscow that he did **t have details of the situation rapidly unfolding on the ground in Turkey and said it would be "inappropriate" to comment on developments.

Currency plunged following the coup. Lira declined 5% against the US dollar, a dramatic move for a major currency.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was given a briefing by Foreign ****** on the developing situation in Turkey.
