ANKARA: The Turkish military on Friday said that it had assumed power over Turkey, in what the prime minister has termed an illegal act.
"The power in the country has been seized in its entirety," said a military statement read on NTV television, without giving further details. The military´s website was **t immediately accessible.
A group within Turkey´s military has attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to "do what is necessary", Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said.
"Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim said in comments broadcast by private channel NTV.
"The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so."
Earlier, Turkish security forces partially shut down the two bridges across the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul as military jets were heard flying low over Ankara.
The Bosphorus and Fatih bridges were closed by the gendarmerie -- a branch of the Turkish military dedicated to internal security -- for traffic travelling from Asia to Europe, NTV television said. Traffic was still moving in the other direction.
Meanwhile, Turkish military aircraft were heard flying low over Ankara, AFP correspondents in the capital reported.
Whereabouts of President Erdogan are **t k**wn but US media reports say he is safe in Ankara. Turkish Army chief is also said to have been taken into custody.
