LAHORE: A division bench of the Lahore High Court on Wednesday, on an intra-court appeal challenging the raise in salaries and perks of the members of the National Assembly, issued **tices to the federal government.

The bench comprising Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan and Justice Shahid Bilal Hassan on Wednesday sought reply from the federal government till August 2.Earlier, Justice Shahid Karim on June 17 had dismissed as **t maintainable the petition challenging raise in salaries and perks of the parliamentarians.

Petitioner Muhammad Mukhtar filed the appeal against the single bench order. Petitioner counsel A K Dogar had said that the salaries of parliamentarians were already high while they were enjoying perks and privilege. He had said that the recent increase in their salaries would be against the principles of Islamic rules of simplicity, and tantamount to discrimination against the common man.

He said that Pakistan had a poor eco**my and its citizens had ** basic health facilities and access to quality education. He submitted that the foreign debt was billions of rupees and the common people were suffering due to the worst poverty and unemployment and were living pathetic life.

He submitted that the petition was moved under Article 199 of the Constitution and was very much maintainable.He said that the single bench could **t appreciate the contention and turned down his request just on maintainability. He said that the petition was on merit and in the national interest and it should be decided on merit.

He requested the court to set aside the raise in salaries of the parliamentarians. He further requested the court to order implementation of Sections 5 and 7 of Enforcement of Shariah Act 1991 of observing golden principles of Shariah.
