A**ther meeting on the issue to be held today
ISLAMABAD: The opposition on Tuesday failed to finalise the names of members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) but decided to continue consultations in this regard. They hope to come out with consensus names, which would be sent to the parliamentary committee on the appointment of members of the Election Commission.
The meeting of the opposition parties was attended by leaders of the PPP, PTI, PML-Q, MQM, ANP, Jamaat-e-Islami, AML of Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad and was presided over by Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah on Wednesday. The opposition members will meet again today (Thursday) to discuss the issue. On the issue of terms of reference (ToRs) for probing the PanamaLeaks, it was decided in the meeting that the final strategy on the issue would be finalised in the opposition parties’ meeting scheduled to be held on July 19.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Khursheed Shah said the meeting discussed the names of the members of the Election Commission and held detailed discussion on the names forwarded by the government. He said the opposition wanted that those names should be finalised that have credible reputation so that free, fair and transparent elections could be held and ** one could point a finger at them.
“We wanted to adopt a transparent procedure for the appointment of members of the ECP and those persons should be appointed who are **t employees of any group, had ** direct links with any party and could make independent decisions,” he said.
Khursheed said consultation was still continuing on the names for the posts of ECP members forwarded by the government. The opposition leader hoped that the government and the opposition will be able to agree on such credible names who will hold free, fair and transparent elections.
Khursheed said the opposition meeting also condemned the Indian forces’ atrocities against the peaceful people of Kashmir.The PTI leader, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, said the government had failed in dividing the opposition. “There was a consensus among the opposition parties that ** political party could support any controversial elections anymore as democracy in Pakistan needs free, fair and transparent polls and for this those persons should be selected who perform their constitutional duty honestly.” He said it was decided that those who will lobby for their names for the post would **t be considered.
Qureshi said the meeting also discussed the issue of PanamaLeaks and the performance of of the parliamentary committee on formulation of ToRs. He said it was decided to hold the meeting in this regard on July 19 to finalise the future strategy on PanamaLeaks. “The opposition decided to formulate legal and political strategy on PanamaLeaks in the July 19 meeting of opposition parties,” he added.
The PTI leader said the government from the very first day wanted to divide the opposition but failed to do so as all the opposition parties attended Wednesday’s meeting and they will also attend the meeting on July 19.
