CAIRO: An Egyptian court handed six policemen prison sentences between three and seven years on Tuesday for beating a detainee to death, a judicial official said.
The defendants, an ******r and five low-ranking policemen, had been put on trial in December over the death of the 47-year-old detainee in the southern province of Qena.
The court in the city of Qena, the provincial capital, convicted them of “beating that led to death and harsh treatment”, the official said.
Seven other policemen were acquitted.
The trial was the latest in a string of prosecutions of policemen accused of abusing detainees or using lethal force.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has promised to toughen laws on police abuses, while also saying such incidents did **t reflect on the entire police force.
Rights groups say abuses have become rampant since the military, then led by Sisi, overthrow Islamist president Mohamed Mursi in 2013.
Police abuses had partly fuelled a 2011 uprising that overthrew veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for 30 years.
