Says govt installed banners to intimidate opposition

ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in the Senate Aitzaz Ahsan said on Tuesday that there was ** threat to democracy and the military neither wants **r it is in a position to launch a coup.

He alleged that the government was involved in hanging the banners calling Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif to intervene and lunch a military coup, aiming to intimidate and embarrass the opposition.

“There is neither threat to the democracy **r the Army is ready to take over but the government is itself displaying these banners with a purpose to put the opposition under pressure and to scare the opposition that the democracy is in danger,” he said while talking to media personas at the Parliament House along with the PPP parliamentary leader in the Senate Saeed Ghani.

Aitzaz said he neither sees any military coup in the future **r there is any threat to democracy. The opposition leader said whenever the opposition raised the issue of PanamaLeaks, London flats and offshore companies, the government started crying that the democracy is in danger. “How could those who spent all their life for democracy could oppose the democracy of Nawaz government,” he added.

Aitzaz said the opposition wanted the accountability of all those who were named in PanamaLeaks. “The opposition wanted to ease the government’s difficulties as the chief justice has returned the government’s letter,” he added.

The PPP leader said Nawaz Sharif wanted an accountability through a toothless commission while the opposition desired even handed accountability of all those who were named in PanamaLeaks and there should be ** discrimination of anyone and even of the prime minister.

He said the opposition is **t seeking immunity for anyone but the only demand is that the accountability be made **t only of those who were named but also of those who facilitated them. “We are giving the opportunity to the prime minister to clear his name and if his name was **t in Panama Papers then he should **t be worried,” he added.

The opposition leader said the PPP will give a legal shape to the terms of reference (ToRs) for probing PanamaLeaks and the draft will be discussed within the party. Aitzaz said the PPP would also unveil the bill for the accountability in the Senate soon. To a question, he said the joint opposition will gather on July 19 in Islamabad on the invitation of the PTI in which all the nine opposition parties would participate and major decisions are expected. “The opposition will **t adopt give and take policy and the implementation of ToRs will be made against all those who were named in PanamaLeaks without any discrimination,” he said.

On the issue of violence in Azad Jummu and Kashmir during the election campaign, the opposition leader said the PML-N was using the tactics of inciting the violence only to highjack the elections in Kashmir. “The government was using bureaucracy in Kashmir elections but the PPP will **t allow to government to hijack the elections,” he added.

He said the situation in the Indian Held Kashmir is very worrisome and sensitive and this situation needs peace in Azad Kashmir but instead the PML-N ministers adopted the violence policy due to which people of Kashmir were angry.

Aitzaz said the PPP worker Chaudhry Munshi was killed and the son of Asfandyar Tariq fired the shots in Bhimber. He said the PPP’s FIR on the incident of Haveli was **t being registered despite the fact that there was the PPP’s government in AJK as the chief secretary and senior officials were appointed by the federal government. He asked the chief election commissioner of Azad Kashmir to take the **tice of statements of the federal ministers which were inciting the violence in Azad Kashmir.
