GirlPower
Spice Girls celebrate two decades of girl power with a feminist facelift and reunion.
There are hit songs and then there are cult classics. Songs that transcend the era they were produced in to achieve posterity often tend to encapsulate the essence of a time and generation, forming a poignant, **stalgic bond with the audience that transports them back to the first time they ever heard the track. It doesn’t necessarily have to be great music; just a song that captures the mood of the moment and resonates with its listeners is e**ugh to form a life-long association that makes you hear the entire track when it comes on the radio as a throwback years later. These songs differ from person to person but every once in a while a song comes along that unites an entire generation.
When Spice Girls made their debut with ‘Wannabe’ in 1996, they did more than give girls all over the world a life-long anthem – the British pop group served as a precursor to other all girl bands at a time when boy bands were all the rage.
Twenty years later hearing the first bars of Wannabe tends to produce the same giddy feelings that it did decades earlier in a generation of mid-twenty to thirty year olds. The global chart topping hit turned twenty this year and to celebrate its lasting success the girls, who’ve been pursuing solo careers for years **w, have come together to reward their loyal following.
‘Wannabe’ itself gets an empowering revamp in the shape of a new feminist narrative imposed on the beloved track. The new video, which serves as on ode to **t only the hit single but also female empowerment, features a bevy of international stars with strong messages that advocate equality in all areas for women. If you haven’t seen it yet, look it up on YouTube. It’s guaranteed to make you smile if **t sing along by the end of it.
The girls too seem to ack**wledge how momentous the occasion is and have hinted at a possible reunion with new music in the pipeline. Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) and Melanie Brown (Scary Spice) have released a short YouTube video under a new umbrella, Spice Girls GEM (the initial letters of their names combined) and are said to be back in the studio working on new music. Conspicuously absent are Sporty and Posh Spice, Melanie Chisholm and Victoria Beckham respectively, even though Beckham tweeted about ‘Wannabe’s’ new makeover. Though the reunion features only three-fifth of the original gang, we’ll happily take it. Don’t have too high hopes from the music, just enjoy whatever they put out as a commemoration of our youth.
