The recent news of the first-k**wn fatality (http://mashable.com/2016/06/30/tesla-autopilot-death-investigation/?utm_campaign=&utm_context=textlink&utm_medium=rss&utm_source=) involving Tesla's semi-auto**mous Autopilot (http://mashable.com/2015/10/14/tesla-auotpilot-hands-on/?utm_campaign=Mash-Prod-RSS-Feedburner-All-Partial&utm_cid=Mash-Prod-RSS-Feedburner-All-Partial) system is undeniably tragic. However, it also highlights one distinct difference between the upstart carmaker and the rest of the established automotive industry: Tesla is beta testing the tech on the public.

Every other automaker — from BMW to Cadillac — flat-out refuses to beta test driverless tech on the public. Other semi-auto**mous driving systems, like Volvo’s Pilot Assist system and Mercedes' Drive Pilot are in public hands, but they’re **t beta tests. More on those later.
