Says Pakistan **t to allow anyone to use its soil against Afghanistan;
US hails General Raheel’s statement
RAWALPINDI: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif visited the troops deployed on frontlines along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kel and Bagh Sectors on Friday.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that during his visit to the LoC, General Raheel Sharif offered Eid felicitations to the troops deployed there and spent time with them. He said the high state of morale of troops’ operational preparedness and vigil being maintained along the LoC were highly commendable. He also visited the troops on the frontlines of **rth and South Waziristan on the Eid day.
While paying rich tributes to the supreme sacrifices of ******rs and men of Pakistan Army at the LoC, the army chief appreciated their spirit of valour, sacrifice and extreme commitment for the defence of the motherland.
Earlier on arrival, the COAS was received by the Corps Commander Lieutenant General Malik Zafar Iqbal.
Meanwhile, General Raheel Sharif on Wednesday stated that operations against terrorists of all hue and colour would continue and Pakistan would **t allow anyone to use its soil against Afghanistan.
Addressing troops on the frontlines in **rth and South Waziristan agencies, the COAS said, “As consolidation goes on and operational dividends optimised for Pak-Afghan border region, Pakistan will **t allow anyone to use its soil against Afghanistan” and directed all commanders, intelligence agencies and LEAs to take concrete measures against violators.
General Raheel Sharif said, “Peace and stability along the Pak-Afghan border remain our priority towards which we will commit all our efforts.” He said, “Border management and dignified repatriation of Afghan refugees are important enablers for lasting peace. Our efforts for peace in Afghanistan have been ack**wledged. While we are committed to facilitate the reconciliation process with sincerity, commitment and resolve, we expect **n-use of Afghanistan territory against Pakistan.”
The COAS said that our nation and valiant army had paid a huge price for eliminating the terrorists and restoring peace in the country and we would **t let these sacrifices go waste.
“With Fata cleared and terrorists being chased across the country, we are determined **t to allow them to return and reverse our gains,” the COAS asserted.
The COAS spent his Eid day visiting the troops in the forward areas in **rth and South Waziristan Agency on Wednesday. He offered his Eid prayers in Shawal and interacted with the troops. Later, he visited Datta Khel where he met the troops. Wishing them a happy Eid, General Raheel commended their morale and spirit of fighting on the frontlines to protect the motherland.
The COAS was briefed by the corps commander and formation commander in detail about the ongoing sanitisation and stabilisation operation as part of Zarb-e-Azb and post operation security environment.
Earlier, on arrival on the frontlines, the COAS was received by Lt. General Hidayat-ur-Rehman, Corps Commander, Peshawar.
Meanwhile, the United States has welcomed COAS General Raheel Sharif’s statement on Thursday to **t let Pakistan be used for terrorist activities against its neighbours.
The United States welcomed the statement by General Raheel Sharif and expressed the hope that Pakistan would implement the words of the general. Senior officials of the White House said that General Raheel’s statement was important and it remained to be seen how Pakistan would implement his words.
Senior representative of the Obama administration said during a press briefing that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had stated the same words before i.e. Pakistan would **t let its land be used for terrorist activities against its neighbours.
He said that during the past few years, Pakistan had acted against terrorist organisations and had also lost many lives in the process.
The senior representative further stated that Pakistan needed to root out militancy by working closely with the United States. He stated that the United States believed that Pakistan’s support was vital to peacekeeping in Afghanistan.
