LAHORE: Dr Uzma Khan, the sister of PTI Chairman Imran Khan, on Sunday apologised to Maryam Nawaz for mistakenly levelling an allegation after her car was hit by a vehicle of a VIP convoy.
“Please accept my apologies that I took the word of Mr Gujjar as the truth in my extreme state of trauma,” said Dr Uzma in a letter addressed to Maryam.The incident took place in the area of Gulberg on Friday when the car of Dr Uzma was hit by a vehicle of a VIP convoy, which belonged to a **ted figure from Azad Jammu Kashmir who had come to offer condolences to Asim Gujjar, former in-charge of Bilawal House, Lahore, over the death of his relative.
The news soon went on air after Dr Uzma disclosed the occurrence to the media and alleged that she was harassed by the security personnel of Maryam Nawaz’s cavalcade and her car was also hit by a vehicle.
The situation became further tense when Imran Khan, who was in Karachi at that time, also slammed the PML-N government over the incident without confirming the actual details. However, in later part of the day, the allegations proved wrong when it was revealed the security convoy belonged to the AJK president.
A blame-game started from both sides and continued till Sunday after Uzma herself tendered a written apology to Mayram through a letter, and it was hailed by the PML-N leadership. However, it still demanded an apology from Imran.
In the letter addressed to Maryam, Uzma stated that on her way to offer the Friday prayer along with her children, she underwent a traumatising experience.“We were harassed and abused and nearly crashed head on by one of the protocol vehicles, when I followed the vehicles into the house, my daughter was left alone outside and the guard told her he would shoot if she didn’t move,” said Uzma.
She went on to say t1:23 AM 7/4/2016hat she asked host (Asim Gujjar) who the protocol detail belonged to, and she was told that it belonged to Maryam Nawaz. She stated that Asim blatantly lied about the identity of his guest. I couldn’t imagine that he had the audacity to take the name of the prime minister’s daughter, said Dr Uzma.
Sumsam Bokhari, PTI Punjab Secretary Information, confirmed that the letter had been written and stated it was really a positive step, adding the PML-N leadership should also learn from this. He said Maryam was held in esteem in the PTI circles as PTI had always shown respect to women but at the same time, its stance towards the VIP culture was unchanged.
The News also tried to contact Asim Gujjar, a PPP member who hosted the AJK president and allegedly lied to Dr Uzma about the facts concerning the protocol, but his cell phone was switched off. PML-N leader Hamza Shahbaz at a ceremony on Sunday hailed the apology and sought an apology from Imran also.
