With Eid-ul-Fitr just round the corner and the city facing a recent spate of attacks over the past few weeks, the provincial police chief on Sunday issued directives calling for all ******rs to work on a comprehensive security plan for the Eid public holidays.
In a statement, Sindh IGP AD Khowaja directed all relevant ******rs to work together for a balanced and practical contingency plan for the Eid holidays, with particular focus on prayer venues, shopping centres and markets, and any other major gathering points.
The provincial police chief urged all subordinate ******rs to call in additional personnel for deployment at all potentially sensitive and also low-threat locations. In his statement, the IGP said that apart from Eid congregation venues, exceptional security measures needed to be enforced at all public places including shopping centers, Eid bachat bazaars, railway stations and bus terminals.
As part of the contingency plan, surveillance teams would be formed at every police station, and all SPs, SDPOs and SHOs have been ordered to ensure round-the-clock patrolling by police personnel at all the above mentioned locations. The IGP's directives also called for efforts to clamp down on the distribution of objectionable literature, wall chalking, posters and pamphlets.
SSU teams deployed
In view of the existing security threats in the metropolis, over 250 commandos of the Special Security Unit (SSU) have been deployed at several shopping centres and markets in the city. According to SSU Commandant Maqsood Ahmed, the over 250 commandos posted on special security duty include more than 50 female commandos and have been deployed at various shopping centres in the city including Saima Paari Mall, Hyderi; Dolmen Mall, Hyderi; Saima Mall, Dalmiya Road; Millennium Mall, Dalmiya Road; Dolmen Mall, Tariq Road; Atrium Mall, Saddar; Ocean Tower, Clifton; Park Towers, Clifton; Hyper Star Clifton; Gulf Shopping Centre, Clifton.
The SSU teams, he added, are equipped with latest ******* and communication systems, and remain in contact with their headquarters round-the-clock to ensure that any potential emergency situation could be tackled effectively.
