LAHORE

Ramazan started with lemon shortage and coming to an end with tomato scarcity in the provincial metropolis where this important vegetable ingredient of every dish has disappeared from the markets while the government has failed to ensure availability of it.

Official rates of tomato has increased by more than 100 percent in a week time in price lists while in open market it is being sold at Rs160 per kg. Hence, the vendors and shopkeepers are **t selling it due to high rates.

Ample supply of tomato was available in the markets last week when the price was around Rs40 per kg. Suddenly, it disappeared from the markets where **body had any clue as the vendors simply said the district government had been fixing the wrong price of it; so they were **t selling it.

According to the tomato vendors, who sold only a single item on weekly basis in the makeshift markets of the city, said the price fixed by the government was only Rs83 to 85 per kg against their purchase price of wholesale level of Rs120 per kg. How one can take loss of almost 30 to 40 percent by selling lower than their purchase price, they questioned.

This again exposes the weak price and supply mechanism of perishable items at wholesale level of the city. The market insider said the imported tomato was stored by some players to fetch money on Eid. They started controlled release of it couple of days ago to dry the market. **w the market is dried out of tomato. Hence they have started manipulating the rates of it well before the Eid.

In the past too, the price of tomato had registered sharp increase well before the Eid. Despite the availability of historical pattern of sudden increase of tomato prices in the past, the district government did **t take any timely measures to avoid this situation.
