PESHAWAR: Speakers at a consultative meeting on implementation of Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Strategy of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa here stressed the need for joint efforts by all the stakeholders to deal with the issue of malnutrition. The meeting was held under the aegis of Inter-cooperation, an international organisation, in collaboration with Scaling Up Nutrition-Civil Society Alliance (SUN-CSA).
“We have to work jointly for raising awareness among communities, media, farmers, government officials and parliamentarians to overcome the problem of malnutrition,” said Shazia Hina, national programme ******r of Inter-cooperation. The meeting was aimed at looking into the challenges and hurdles to the implementation of the Multi-Sectoral Nutrition Strategy in the province and developing consensus to move forward for its implementations. Representatives of the civil society, media, parliamentarians, policy makers, director general health, director general agriculture and chief health and assistant chief health of planning and development department attended the meeting. The participants discussed situation of malnutrition in the country with special reference to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. They said the country and province were struggling to improve nutrition despite a lot of work at the national and provincial level on the issue.
Director General Health Dr Parvez Kamal said that problem rested with following the procedures laid down by the government, which delayed the approval of the specific project.
Member Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Syed Jaffar Shah stressed capacity-building of the line departments along with communities for improving nutrition practices in urban and rural areas.
Dr Naseer Muhammad Nizamani, country director Microneutrient Initiatives (MI), shared the salient features of the strategy.
