Cops visit major mosques, address people after Friday prayers
PESHAWAR: The authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have launched an aggressive campaign against aerial firing and sale of toy guns.A number of senior ******rs visited major mosques of the city during Friday prayers and addressed the worshippers after the sermons by the peshimams.
“We have launched an aggressive campaign all over the provincial capital to discourage aerial firing on the occasion of Chand Raat as well as other festive occasions as stray bullets claim several lives every time,” Capital City Police ******r Mubarak Zeb told The News.
He said meetings were held with elected representatives, elders and other people in connection with the drive against aerial firing.
“Police have placed banners, printed pamphlets and posters and visited various places as part of the campaign,” Mubarak Zeb said. He added that Senior Superintendent of Police Operations Abbas Majeed Marwat and other ******rs visited various mosques during Friday prayers and addressed the gatherings to tell the people how risky the practice was for the society.
“Other superintendents of police, sub-divisional police ******rs and station house ******rs also addressed the faithful after Friday sermons to create an awareness among the people against aerial firing,” the city police chief said. Besides, the police and the district administration have started a campaign against the sale of toy guns, which promote the culture of violence among the kids. The deputy commissioners of various districts have banned the sale and use of toy guns under Section 144 of the Pakistan Penal Code. However, the sale of the toy guns is still going on.
On Friday, the SSP Operations Abbas Majeed Marwat visited Masjid Mohabbat Khan and other mosques to inspect security for Jummatul Wida, the last Friday of Ramazan. He later spoke at the mosques asking the public to discourage the practice of aerial firing on Chand Raat as the stray bullets kill people on the roads, in streets, in their courtyards and on rooftop. He warned that police will take action against the violators of the law, urging the elders to ensure that there is ** aerial firing in their localities.
The SSP Operations also informed the public about the police information network (PIN) and said any citizen providing credible information about a terrorist or militant will be rewarded with a prize of Rs10,000 to Rs100,000 in cash. He reminded them that police can**t restore peace without the support of the public.
The SSP also told the people to identify any Afghan who is having fake Pakistani identity card. The police during the last three weeks took into custody 2,200 Afghan nationals who neither had proof of registration cards **r travel document to legalise their stay in Peshawar.
“All the ******rs, SDPOs and SHOs of Cantt division visited different Jamia Masajid and addressed the gathering about the menace of aerial firing, illegal stay of Afghans and PIN. They have received healthy feedback. It was an effort to reconnect with public and highlight major issues directly affecting public peace,” said Kashif Zulfiqar, SP Cantt Peshawar.
Many SHOs and their staff were seen distributing literature about the menace of aerial firing, PIN and illegal stay of foreigners. Similar campaigns were carried out in Mardan, Kohat, Swabi, **wshera and other districts.
