AJK getting electricity from
three power companies; tariff increased from Rs2.59 to 5.79 per unit
ISLAMABAD: The government has increased the electricity tariff for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) by over 120 percent to Rs5.79 per unit from Rs2.59 per unit. The AJK government has been getting the electricity from three electricity power distribution companies (Discos) at the bulk rate of Rs2.59 per units since 2007.
The government of Pakistan had to pick huge subsidy in the head of AJK which will **w reduce to some extent and give some breather to the central government after increasing the AJK tariff up to Rs5.79 per unit. “We have decided to increase the tariff to Rs5.79 per unit after ample consultations with AJK government and in this way the step can be termed as consensus decision,” a senior official of Ministry of Water and Power told The News. “We are **w poised to send a summary to ECC for approval of the arrangement done between federal and AJK governments. After that Nepra will be told that the new tariff of AJK stands at Rs5.79 per unity.”
The official said once the ECC approved the new arrangement with AJK government, the decision would be applicable since July 1, 2015. The officials also share that AJK government is still need to pay dues of Rs60 billion to the government of Pakistan as the massive dues which are payable to the Centre is **t yet paid by AJK. With the decision, three electric power distribution companies (Discos) that include Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco), Islamabad Electric Supply Company (Iesco), and Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) were used to park major chunk of their losses in the head of AJK would **w **t be able to do so. The said three companies provide the electricity to whole AJK, out of which Pesco alone provides 60-70 percent electricity.
The combined feeder in Pesco that is responsible to provide electricity to AJK and KP, but Pesco administration always shows the huge losses in the head of 37 percent AJK from the feeder showing the fact that Discos is involved in parking its inefficiencies in the shape of losses in the head of AJK. And the same case is also with Iesco and Gepco.
