ZAGREB: Croatia has erected a barrier on its border with Serbia to prevent migrants entering the country, the government said on Thursday.
The interior ministry said that "technical barriers" were placed at the Batina crossing on Croatia’s eastern side to "prevent possible attempts at illegal entry".
Local media broadcast photos of a two-metre high metal barrier on the road bridge crossing, which was closed for a few hours overnight.
On Thursday after**on one lane of traffic was open but the barrier could be activated to "completely block the bridge", the ministry said.
Hundreds of thousands of migrants from the Middle East, Asia and Africa have crossed through Croatia since last summer on their way to western Europe, but the so-called "Balkan route" effectively shut down in March.
Migrants have however continued to cross the region in smaller numbers, often with the help of smugglers.
Many of them have chosen to head from Serbia to Hungary -- which is a member of the passport-free Schengen zone -- rather than Croatia.
But Croatian media said the new barrier was erected amid rumours that several hundred migrants were approaching the border, although the interior ministry said there were ** "security threats".
In Serbia, both police and a spokeswoman for the minister in charge of migrants said there were "** migrants heading in that direction".
