Karachi
A residential locality on the outskirts of the city, Saadi Town, came dangerously close to urban flooding after a storm water drain overflowed, inundating vacant plots on the other side of the locality, after two days of intermittent rains, on Thursday.
The inundation set alarms bells ringing for residents of the locality who had previously braved a severe inundation of the area while a person was reported to have died, in 2013, when heavy rains had breached weirs built in Gadap Town, a nearby locality.
The civic agencies including the Malir Cantonment Board (MCB) and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) dug trenches for the water to drain out and clear the garbage which had resulted in the choking of the drain.
KMC senior director municipal services Masood Alam, however, claimed that there was ** chance of urban flooding or a repetition of a 2013-like situation since the KMC staff along with Cantonment Board authorities had started clearing the storm water drains in the area.
“Our homes remained under water for several days when rainwater overflowed from the Thaddo and Lat weirs, which had been constructed in the outskirts of the city for recharging ground water,” said Asad Ali, a resident of Saadi Town.
He said the drain was separating Saadi Town from vacant plots allocated for Saadi Garden – a yet to be built locality – but had been choked due to garbage.
The resident claimed that small, ill-constructed dams in Gadap Town, were a serious threat to Saadi Town, Amroha Society and other neighbouring settlements since the dams could **t hold water in case it rained more than 50 millimetres.
Rainwater remained accumulated at some other points in the city, creating hurdles in smooth flow of traffic.
Health officials claimed that rainwater could serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes carrying dengue, malaria and zika virus. “An outbreak of the disease was looming large in the city as there were still a number of areas where rainwater was still accumulated,” stated Dr Zeeshan Ansari.
