An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday rejected the Rangers’ request to **t let Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) mayoral candidate Waseem Akhtar travel abroad.

The ATC (II) had permitted Waseem Akhtar to go abroad for 20 days, on June 27, after he had assured the court of coming back and attending hearings of cases registered against him.

A Rangers’ prosecutor informed the court that he had come to k**w of Akhtar’s plans through media, and he feared that he would **t come back if he was allowed to leave.

The prosecutor further maintained that the **minated mayor was influential e**ugh to be running his businesses even if he was sent to a prison.

Akhtar, countering the prosecutor’s arguments, remarked that he a mayor **minee for the city and had his entire family in Karachi so it was fair to say that he would come back.

He contended that he attached high respect to the courts which was why he sought their permission instead of running away without informing the court.

Waseem Akhtar, granted interim bail, was among a MQM and PPP leaders stated to be accomplices of Dr Asim Hussain – former petroleum minister – in a case pertaining to providing shelter and medical treatment to terrorists and Lyari gangsters at Dr Hussain’s hospitals in **rth Nazimabad and Clifton.

Only two suspects, Dr Asim and Pasban leader Usman Moazzam, are currently in jail in the case. Their bail was rejected by the ATC on the previous hearing.

The case pertains to providing medical treatment and refuge to alleged terrorists and militants at Ziauddin hospitals, run by Dr Asim. The political leaders have been implicated for allegedly asking the former petroleum minister to harbour and treat militants at his hospitals premises.
