Claims premier, family ** longer Sadiq, Amin for hiding assets
ISLAMABAD: Following in the footsteps of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has also filed a reference with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) seeking the disqualification of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif for ** longer being Sadiq (truthful) and Amin (just).
The PPP submitted a 1,000-page reference against the prime minister, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Hamza Shahbaz, Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar and Captain (R) Muhammad Safdar accusing them of hiding their assets.
The reference requested the commission to take action against the prime minister in accordance with Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution. The decision to file the reference was taken in the PPP meeting chaired by Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari last week.
Speaking to the media on Monday, the PPP Secretary General Latif Khosa, who filed the reference against the prime minister, said Nawaz Sharif had defaulted on Rs6 billion when he filed his **mination papers with the ECP in 2013.
Speaking about the document that the party had submitted to the ECP, he said it contained details of all hidden assets of the prime minister since 1985. "**t only Nawaz Sharif, we have also presented ourselves before the courts. We have collected income statements from 1985 which should be accounted for," he said.
Khosa also said a person who paid tax of Rs4,000 to Rs5,000 could **t own billions of rupees. "It is responsibility of the Election Commission **t to let a dishonest and untrustworthy person to remain a member of Parliament," he said.
He said the reference also contained conflicting statements of Sharif family with regard to PanamaLeaks. He said this time neither the public would remain silent, **r the PPP. He said the self-respecting international figures named in the Panama Papers had resigned. "The Sharif family has looted and robbed this country," he said.
He said whoever's name was mentioned in the PanamaLeaks should be investigated. "We will **t support rigging and corruption. Neither will we support any unlawful or illegal step," he added.
“If Rehman Malik has been named in the PanamaLeaks he should be probed too.” Khosa also said the purpose of the Charter of Democracy (CoD) was **t to support any party indulging in corruption.
He said the opposition had been giving time to the PM since April 3 to offer himself for accountability but the government was opposed to it. He said the Parliamentary Committee on ToRs was just a move by the government to buy time.
Khosa said it was duty of the ECP to disqualify candidates who were **t honest and truthful. He said evidences about the prime minister’s involvement in money laundering had been submitted along with the reference filed on Monday.
The reference alleges that the prime minister showed wrong asset details of his wife and children and misled the ECP about his income tax returns. It also alleges that the prime minister has committed smuggling and money-laundering.
A letter of the State Bank of Pakistan about Rs6.5 billion bank default would also be made part of the reference. Sardar Latif Khosa said all five of them did **t meet the criteria for holding a public ****** under Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution.
Responding to the PPP’s move, the PML-Nawaz said it was geared up for the battle that lay ahead. PML-N parliamentarian Talal Chaudhry said: "The PPP has filed a reference to hide its own faults. We are prepared for a legal battle."
Though the two major opposition parties — the PPP and PTI — have filed disqualification references against the prime minister with the ECP, both references will remain on the table for a long time, as the commission is **t functional with the retirement of its four members.
