Karachi

A day after top government and military officials, including the interior minister and army chief, visited the city to reassess the ongoing operation in light of recent lapses, the chief of the ruling provincial party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, on Monday chaired an emergency with top authorities of Sindh wherein he called for immediate and focused efforts to improving the policing mechanism of the province.

His suggestion, as per reports, came after he was briefed on the progress being made in investigations into the kidnapping of Sindh High Court Chief Justice Sajjad
Ali Shah’s son, Owais Ali Shah, and the murder of cultural icon, Qawwal Amjad Sabri.

The meeting participants included Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Home Minister Suhail Anwar Siyal, Chief Secretary Muhammad Siddique Memon and IGP AD Khowaja.

Earlier in the day, Bilawal visited SHC CJ Sajjad Ali Shah at his chambers to assure the concerned father that dedicated efforts were being made to recover his son at the earliest.

As for suggestions related to police reforms, the PPP chief stressed the need to introduce latest tech**logy and tools in our current law enforcement methods. He said that the outdated equipment and methods were among the core reasons for the lax state of policing affairs.

A**ther point raised – one that has long been cited by officials from all branches of government and law enforcement – was the need to improve coordination among all security agencies and relevant departments.

On-ground policing methods to came under discussion, with Bilawal emphasising the need to provide a conducive environment where the common people should be able to approach the police and other law enforcement agencies without any fears and hindrances.

For this, he said, an open-door policy must be adopted up to the level of SPs and DIGs, stating that such decisions could go a long way in changing the public’s negative perception of the police force.

The PPP chief also suggested that the public be provided easy access to information and a transparent complaint generation system, adding that these seemingly minute efforts were what was really needed to make Karachi a safer city.

Bilawal also advised the home minister and IGP to hold regular media briefings on law and order to apprise the public about the steps and efforts being taken by the provincial government to restore peace in the metropolis.

SHC CJ

In his meeting with SHC CJ Sajjad Ali Shah, Bilawal assured the chief justice that all efforts were being made by the provincial government and law enforcement agencies for the safe recovery of Owais Ali Shah.

Bilawal was accompanied by Ali Haider Gilani, the son of former prime minister Yusuf Raza Gillani.

He stayed with Justice Sajjad Ali Shah for more than thirty minutes and informed him of all the steps being taken to recover his son. Bilawal assured the SHC CJ that he was taking a personal interest in the case and would be monitoring all recovery efforts himself.
